After almost ten long years, one of TV’s most brutal historical sagas returns this winter with a new house, and a new vision for its future. Spartacus: House of Ashur is bringing back the sandaled-sex and sword-swinging violence that made the original show and its sequels a hit – even if it was a little overshadowed by a certain HBO series about thrones and dragons. Now a new trailer for the upcoming revival is reminding everyone of just how gloriously gory the series was and will be once again.
Revealed at SDCC, the trailer for Spartacus: House of Ashur brings plenty of blood and gore, a little bit of steamy action that has nothing to do with Roman baths, and the kind of stylized epic visuals that made the show a standout during its original series. Can House of Ashur bring a whole new audience to the Spartacus saga? Check out the trailer and decide for yourself.

With a new sequel series in the works, now is the perfect to look back at the original Spartacus and its three seasons.
Spartacus debuted in 2010 and consisted of four seasons. Each season had its own subheadings of Blood and Sand, Gods of the Arena, Vengeance, and War of the Damned. The series originally starred Andy Whitfield as its lead, but the second season was delayed when Whitfield was diagnosed with early-stage non-Hodgkin lymphoma. For this reason, Gods of the Arena took the form of a six-episode miniseries which acted as a prequel to the first season.
Whitfield passed away in 2011, leading to Liam McIntyre stepping into the role of Spartacus for Vengeance, which was released in 2012. The final season, War of the Damned, was released in 2013. In 2023, it was announced that Spartacus would be returning for a sequel series, with original writer Stephen DeKnight returning as showrunner, and Nick E. Tarabay returning to his former role as Ashur, despite the character’s original demise.
‘Spartacus: House of Ashur’ Is an Alternate History of Its Title Character
The new series will show an alternate path for Ashur, and depict what would have happened if he had not been killed on Mount Vesuvius. The story sees Ashur given the ludus formerly owned by Batiatus for his brave actions in helping end the slave rebellion against the Romans. The extensive cast of the series includes Simon Arblaster, Joel Abadal, Evander Brown, Lucy Lawless, Daniel Bos, Mikey Thompson, Stephen Madsen, Graham McTavish, Ivana Baquero, Jordi Webber, Jamaica Vaughan, Tenika Davis, and Claudia Black.
Fans have been waiting a long time to see Spartacus return, and this time the show does not have to compete with Game of Thrones for the attention of those seeking out something with plenty of shocking violence and raunchy sex.
For the last few months, Spartacus’ previous incarnation has been topping the Starz streaming chart, which suggests there is an audience out there desperately waiting for more of the same gore-laden action that the series provides. There are certainly no similar shows out there right now, and that could make Spartacus: House of Ashur a huge hit that can easily rival its predecessors. The series does not currently have an air date.
