Jack Black Wants a Super Mario Bros Sequel to Focus on Bowser’s Revenge

Jack Black Wants a Super Mario Bros Sequel to Focus on Bowser’s Revenge

While The Super Mario Bros. Movie is being battered by many critics, there seems to be a running thread of positivity among all of that – Jack Black’s performance as Bowser. The comedy star has been praised for his epic voice work as the villain of the film, and if Black gets his way then this won’t be the last time he gives a growly delivery as the king of the Koopas. In fact, Black already knows what he wants to see in a spin-off or sequel.

Although there have been many critics who have knocked points off The Super Mario Bros. Movie for being too safe, it seems that everyone loves Jack Black’s loud and over the top performance. At this point, the film is set to smash the box office this weekend and that means those other Mario projects that are already well in development will certainly not be getting canned. While speaking with Screen Rant, Black pitched exactly where he wants to see Bowser go next. He said:

“It would be cool to have “Bowser’s Revenge.” Or a spin-off that’s just “Bowser Town.” Like a whole planet of Browsers. But that’s not my job. I’m not the writer. I’ll do whatever direction they want to go. I’d love to do more.”

The Super Mario Bros. Movie Is Looking For A $225 Million Opening Weekend.

IMDb

While many movies have struggled at the box office in the last year, The Super Mario Bros. Movie is not likely to be one of them. Despite a poor Rotten Tomatoes score, the film could well end up being one of the highest grossing movies of the year just based on its opening weekend, which is expected to hit over $225 million worldwide. Of course, that is just the start and as long as the movie can avoid the same kind of second week drop that many movies currently suffer, it could very quickly find itself heading towards taking over Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania as the highest grossing film of 2023 so far. Naturally, there are a lot more films to be released this year, and it is unlikely The Super Mario Bros. Movie will end the year in the top spot, but it will certainly earn itself its sequel and spin-offs.

Currently there are not official plans for any further movies, but there have already been rumors of a Donkey Kong spin-off with Seth Rogen and the obligatory sequel. There are many avenues for the Mario franchise to head down, and it could even end up adapting some of the many games such as Luigi’s Mansion or Donkey Kong Country.

This weekend though, it is all about the current movie and how big a box office it can land. The film features and all-star cast including Chris Pratt, Charlie Day, Anya Taylor-Joy, Jack Black, Seth Rogen and Keegan-Michael Key and is out in cinemas now.
