James Bond Producer Recalls ‘Very Sad’ Meeting with Amy Winehouse for Quantum of Solace Theme

Late singer Amy Winehouse once came close to providing music for the James Bond movie series, but as producer Barbara Broccoli details in a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, it wasn’t meant to be. Before her passing in 2011, Winehouse was at one point set to record the Bong theme for the 2008 film Quantum of Solace. This is something that’s explored in the new documentary The Sound of 007 which will debut on Prime Video on Oct. 5, the 60th anniversary of the original Bond film, Dr. No.

Speaking with EW, Broccoli provided some additional details about what happened with Winehouse and Quantum of Solace. Broccoli remembers having a meeting with Winehouse about the plans for the song, and while the legendary singer’s brilliance and talent were apparent, it was also clear she was struggling at the time. As Broccoli says, it was “very very sad” for her to see.

“Well, that was a very very distressing meeting, she was not at her best and my heart really went out to her. She was very fragile emotionally and, you know, you understood how she could create such moving material, because she has a great depth of feeling and it was very very tragic. What an incredible talent, what an incredible voice, what an incredible person she was and it was very very sad.”

Jack White and Alicia Keys Replaced Amy Winehouse

With her personal problems affecting her work, Winehouse ultimately departed Quantum of Solace, leaving a need for another musician or two to come in and provide the theme. This would later go to Jack White and Alicia Keys who’d collaborate on a duet in the form of the divisive song “Another Way to Die.” Over the summer, White explained on the Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend podcast what it was like to come onto the project at the last minute when Winehouse exited, as well as the thoughts people had about his duet with Keys.

“To this day, it’s straight across the board. People always say you either love or you hate it. That song is… there are people who hate it so much, and there are people who love it so much. Nowhere in the middle. It’s so strange… I got in because Amy Winehouse wasn’t showing up to the sessions or wasn’t delivering the song that they were asking her to do. So it was, ‘We were running out of time, we need somebody else…’ And I thought, ‘Oh, this was great, because now I’m going to get away with murder. I’m going to put things in this song, they would never approve of this.’ And that happened… The music director was not down with anything. He was trying to convince me to turn it into a ballad or something like that.”

More will be uncovered in The Sound of 007 which fans will be able to stream when it hits Prime Video on Oct. 5. That same day, all 25 James Bond movies will also be made available to stream for a limited time in celebration of the movie franchise’s 60th anniversary.
