Ncuti Gatwa Says He “Drowned” in Ryan Gosling’s Blue Eyes on Barbie Set

Summary

  • Greta Gerwig made a great choice casting Ryan Gosling as Ken in Barbie, as he captivated the audience and co-stars, especially Ncuti Gatwa.
  • Warner Bros. and Gerwig were happy to stick with their original choice of Gosling, as he and his character were highly praised in the film.
  • Gatwa found it difficult to work with Gosling because of his mesmerizing blue eyes, and even fell over once while talking to him.

There’s no doubt that Greta Gerwig nailed it by casting Ryan Gosling‘s as Barbie’s eternal companion Ken, since he has not only captivated the audience with his performance, but also his own co-stars, especially Ncuti Gatwa.

Just as Margot Robbie was always the first choice for the main role in the highest-grossing movie from 2023, Gosling was also the first name that came to mind when thinking about who would be part of the large and full-of-stars cast of Barbie. And after the movie came out, Warner Bros. Pictures and Gerwig must have been really pleased to have remained faithful to that first idea, since the actor and his character were one of the most praised elements of the entire film.

However, for Gatwa it was hard to work with Gosling, not because the Academy Award-nominee had a bad attitude or anything like that, but because of his beautiful blue eyes. Speaking with Elle Magazine, the star of Sex Education confessed he sometimes got lost in his co-star eyes:

“I was so nervous I hardly spoke for the first month [on set]. There was a time when I was talking to Greta and I turned around and Ryan Gosling was looking at me, and his eyes were so blue that I just… fell over. I just drowned in his eyes.”

In the film, Gatwa plays one of the many Kens from Barbieland, who later joins Golsing’s Ken on his attempt for turning that pink female dominated world into something more similar to the real world he sees when he follows Barbie on her adventure.

What’s Next for Ncuti Gatwa?

BBC Studios

Gatwa started his career as a stage actor back in 2013, and made his way into television in 2014, playing a background character in the British sitcom Bob Servant. In 2019, he got his breakout role as Eric Effiong in Netflix’s Sex Education, while also debuting on the big screen as Timidus in Horrible Histories: The Movie – Rotten Romans.

He has collected just a few roles on his short career, but there’s no doubt he has a bright future ahead of him. Besides being part of one of the most popular movies of the year, Gatwa will soon return as Eric in the fourth and last season of Sex Education. However, his participation in Barbie and the last installment of the Netflix’s hit are not the most relevant projects for Gatwa this year. In November, as a part of the celebration of the 60th Anniversary of Doctor Who, the actor will be introduced as the next star of the praised BBC series, which will definitely be the role of his life.
