New Master of Horror Has Bad News For His Long-Awaited Reboot ‘Texas Chainsaw Massacre’

Months ago, we reported that the rights for the horror franchise The Texas Chain Saw Massacre were being eyed by several Hollywood figures, who were hungry enough to make their bid and produce a possible remake. Glen Powell and Taylor Sheridan were some of the potential buyers, with modern master of horror Osgood Perkins also showing interest. However, the process apparently met a dead end. Independent agency Verve still holds the rights to the franchise, but no one really knows if the rights have been officially sold. Perkins is now reporting that there were attempts to acquire the IP, but he doesn’t know “where it stands at this point.” The reboot of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre remains an idea and nothing else.

Perkins made an appearance at San Diego Comic-Con to promote his latest horror movie. Keeper, starring Tatiana Maslany and Rossif Sutherland, is being teased as one of the most terrifying experiences of the year, adding one more credit to Perkins’ wallet of scares. It was at the event that Perkins caught up with Comic Book and talked about the potential reboot of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre:

“The reality is that we did put our best foot forward with that, along with a lot of folks. I actually don’t know where it stands at this point. We would have been very excited to do that. We definitely threw in. Honestly, I don’t know what is happening with it. But we did go forward — Neon and I — did put ourselves forward in a way that we felt very excited about and really wanted to do something that was as charming as the original.”

Texas Chainsaw Massacre Movies: How to Watch in Order of Release Date

Trying to tackle the messy Texas Chainsaw Massacre series of movies can be confusing. Here are all nine films listed in order of release.

The Texas Chain Saw Massacre franchise was born in 1974, when Tobe Hooper delivered one of the most effective horror movies ever made. It was inspired by Ed Gein’s heinous acts during his run as a serial killer, but the film was much more than a realistic portrayal of murder. The indie horror film was critically acclaimed, and with time, it built a strong legacy. Today, it is regarded as one of the best horror movies of all time.

Unless you closely follow the horror franchise and everything that has come after the early Texas Chain Saw Massacre movies, you likely lost track of how many films the franchise has. By this point, nine films have been produced. That is, aside from all the comics, books, and video games that have been inspired by Tobe Hooper’s classic of 1974. However, there is simply nothing like the original (and part 2, which is also great).

The only feature that has never been officially released is All American Massacre, a 60-minute movie directed by Hooper’s son, and which featured the return of Chop Top, Bill Moseley’s character from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2. Kim Henkel, original screenwriter alongside Tobe Hooper, also wrote and produced Butcher Boys in 2012, a film that was originally planned as a sequel to The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, but then turned into a standalone feature.
