    Longlegs has
    received praise.
  • Longlegs
contributes to Cage’s indie success, and the actor has severl more roles lined up.

Nicolas Cage has settled the score on comments he made last year about his potential retirement from Hollywood, clarifying exactly what his statement of having “three or four movies in me” actually meant. After delivering some of the best movies of his career in the last several years, it would be surprising if Cage was suddenly about to throw in the towel, and while me may not be quite ready for that just yet, he does see it on the horizon.

Cage is currently setting social media alight with his performance in Osgood Perkins’ horror movie Longlegs. Cage stars as the villain of the movie, a sinister presence that has been almost completely hidden from the movie’s marketing. The movie is already drawing a lot of praise from critics, with several going so far as to call it the most unsettling horror movie of the last decade, and with its theatrical release imminent, audiences will soon have their chance to see the movie and judge for themselves.

Longlegs

4.5/5

Longlegs is a horror thriller film by writer-director Osgood Perkins. When FBI agent Lee Harker is assigned to a serial killer cold case, their investigation leads them down a rabbit hole riddled with disturbing discoveries and the occult at the center of it all. When the trail of evidence reveals a personal connection, it becomes a race against time to prevent another murder.

All in all, though, the film is just another lauded performance from Cage, but as he revealed to The New Yorker, he doesn’t count his Longlegs role as one that counts towards his retirement plan. Clarifying his original 2023 statement about how many movies he expected to make, Cage said:

Well, I did two or three very supporting roles. So maybe three or four more lead roles. Maybe that’s more of what I was saying.

The actor went on to note that, in his opinion, his role in Longlegs is one that slips into the supporting role category too, as “you don’t want to see the shark is made of rubber.” Explaining his thoughts around Longlegs he said:

“It would have been a slippery slope [to be on screen more in Longlegs]. I think it could have lapsed into something almost too ridiculous. You don’t want to see that the shark is made of rubber, you know? You want the shark to be terrifying and keep it under the water for a lot of it.”

Longlegs Continues Nicolas Cage’s Indie Success

While many of Cage’s biggest early hits were cinematic blockbusters like NationalTreasure, Face/Off and Con Air, he has spent almost a decade mostly avoiding the bright lights of Hollywood and focusing his efforts on smaller movies. When it comes to critical success, the decision paid off, as Cage has barely put a foot wrong in anything he has done recently. From the masterful Pig – which Cage revealed in the same interview is the movie he wants everyone to see – through the meta The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, to Dream Scenario and Arcadian, Cage has found himself a niche in the world that he seems to fit with perfectly.

A never-better Maika Monroe and Kiernan Shipka heighten Osgood Perkins’ stunning thriller to unheard-of satanic levels.

Longlegs now appears to have not only solidified the actor’s recent successes, but elevated them even higher. For an actor who spent many years producing movies that seemed unable to please either audiences or critics, his renaissance is a redemption that has been a long time coming. Following Longlegs, Cage has several roles already lined up as his next potential success, including playing Joseph in The Carpenter’s Son, the lead role of Ben in Brian Skiba’s The Gunsligners, and a TV lead in Amazon’s dark Spider-Man series, Noir.

Longlegs
opens in cinemas on July 12.
