Nope Star Brandon Perea Joins the Cast of Twisters

The cast of Twisters grows with the addition of Brandon Perea to the cast. Variety reports that the actor, who appeared in Jordan Peele’s sci-fi thriller Nope last year, has signed on for a role in the Twister sequel. Details haven’t been revealed about the role Perea will play, but he’ll be joining previously announced cast members Daisy Edgar-Jones (Where the Crawdads Sing), Glen Powell (Top Gun: Maverick), and Anthony Ramos (Transformers: Rise of the Beasts). Lee Isaac Chung (Minari) is directing the feature film with the screenplay coming from Mark L. Smith (The Revenant).

Aside from his role in Nope, Perea can also be recognized from his role in the Netflix series The OA. He also appeared in the superhero series Doom Patrol. His other film credits include roles in Dance Camp and American Insurrection. The actor had also made some waves by throwing his name into the hat to be considered for a role in Marvel Studios’ upcoming Fantastic Four movie, though he’ll certainly be just one of many actors gunning for that project.

Twisters has been described as the next “chapter” in the Twister universe. There were rumors when the project was in early development that it would be a legacy sequel, possibly with Helen Hunt reprising her role from Twister for the film, but there’s still no indication at this time that Hunt will be involved in any capacity. Current word from the rumor mill is that the film will not feature any direct links to the first film in terms of returning characters, but references to the storm from Twister still may be used.

Twister Is Getting a Follow-Up Film

Warner Bros.

The original Twister, released in 1996, was directed by Jan de Bont and written by Michael Crichton and Anne-Marie Martin. Hung starred alongside Bill Paxton as a pair of married storm chasers who, along with their team, get caught up in a severe tornado storm outbreak in Oklahoma. Other cast members from the film included the late Philip Seymour Hoffman, as well as Jami Gertz, Cary Elwes, Alan Ruck, Todd Field, Jeremy Davies, and Sean Whalen.

“I am so grateful to have been a part of this original movie,” Whalen said with a post on Instagram last year when asked by many if he would be a part of Twisters. “It has helped me travel to places I never would’ve gone to and to meet hundreds of people I never would’ve met.”

He added, “That said, there is no need to keep asking if I am involved in the sequel. I wouldn’t know for months and if I was involved they probably wouldn’t let me tell you anyway. I am assuming they will pick maybe a few original people and I may or may not be one of them. Obviously, I would love to be a part of it, But it’s all good. I’m just happy to be part of the Twister original.”

For what it’s worth, it doesn’t seem that any actors from the first movie will be involved with Twisters, unless something changes soon. Twisters is set to be released in movie theaters on July 19, 2024.
