Ryan Reynolds Receives Governor General’s Award

It has been quite a ride for Ryan Reynolds in the last couple of years, with numerous hit movies including Free Guy and Red Notice boosting box office and streaming figures for 2021 and a number of other projects in various stages of development including that ever-rumored, long-awaited arrival of Deadpool in the MCU. He even found time to announce that he was taking a little time off from acting, which saw him take off on holiday to the U.K. Now to round off his year in style, the actor has been awarded the Governor General’s Award by Gov. Gen. Mary Simon.

Tweeting the news himself on his social media, Reynolds commented that he was “a wreck” after receiving the accolade. He wrote, “Last night, Canada honoured me with a Governor General’s Award and this video. I’m not crying. It’s just maple syrup. Steven Page is a friend and legend for wasting this amazing song on me. Thank you to Her Excellency, [Gov. Gen.], Mary Simon. I’m a wreck.”

Following up in his usual style, he continued, “I’m glad I don’t have to be dead to experience something like this. I’m so beyond touched right now. I recommend making a list of people you appreciate, then immediately telling them. You don’t even have to write this list with the blood of your enemies. Just a regular pen works.”

Reynolds’ original post also comes with a five-minute video, featuring a short musical number by Steven Page, as well as mention to the organizations that the 45-year-old and his wife Blake Lively regularly donate to including the Hospital for Sick Children and Daily Bread Food Bank. The end of the video is taken up by Reynolds, with a tear in his eye, reacting to the messages.

Reynolds recently wrapped filming on his new musical take on A Christmas Carol, Spirited, in which he stars with Will Ferrell for Apple TV+, and while it is not out until next Christmas, we can already smell a big hit coming his way. Recently, his collaborative Red Notice, which sees him teaming up with Dwayne Johnson and Gal Gadot in Netflix’s most expensive movie ever, blew away the streaming platform’s records to become the biggest original movie in the streamer’s history, making it’s reported $200 million budget seem to have paid off.

That said, critics were not quite on board, with many calling it a B-grade action movie with an A-list cast. However, as with most critically panned movies, audiences have flocked to simply have a bit of escapism from the issues of the real world, which is really the purpose of this type of movie: a fact that seems to have been lost in the last year with many critics tearing down most of the big movies of the year in one way or another.

Ryan Reynolds will next be seen in The Adam Project, a sci-fi movie directed by Shawn Levy, which also stars Jennifer Garner, Zoe Saldana, Mark Ruffalo and Catherine Keener and comes to Netflix early next year.
