Saoirse Ronan & Paul Mescal Star in First Look at Foe, Garth Davis’ Apocalyptic Thriller

Summary

  • After his previous successes, Garth Davis returns with the apocalyptic thriller “Foe,” starring Saoirse Ronan and Paul Mescal.
  • The story follows a couple living in a secluded farm whose dynamic changes when the husband is selected for a two-year space mission.
  • Davis hopes the film will encourage viewers to be present and appreciate the preciousness of life, with stunning performances from Ronan and Mescal.

After being highly acclaimed for his first two movies Lion and Mary Magdalene, Garth Davis is back behind the cameras with Foe, an apocalyptic, sexy thriller starring two Academy Award-nominees, Saoirse Ronan and Paul Mescal. Based on the novel by equally celebrated author Iain Reid, whose popular novel I’m Thinking of Ending Things was recently adapted by Charlie Kauffman, the story follows the marriage life of Han and Junior, who live in a secluded farm in an uncertain world. Their dynamic suddenly changes when a stranger shows up at their door, announcing that Junior has been selected to travel to a space station for two years, something he doesn’t feel comfortable with, because he doesn’t want to leave his wife alone.

However, Terrance, the man who represents the space company, assures him that Hen won’t be left alone. While Junior’s gone, a biomechanical replica of him will stay with her and make sure she is safe. This news completely changes the relationship between the couple, and while Terrance constantly visits them in order to collect data to create an accurate replica of Junior, things get even worse.

On Tuesday, Vanity Fair has shared a series of first look images from the movie, showcasing Ronan, Mescal and Aaron Pierre, who plays Terrance. You can check out the first look images from Foe below.

Garth Davis Reflects on the Message Behind Foe

Amazon Studios

While speaking with Vanity Fair, Garth Davis revealed what he liked about Reid’s story and the message he hopes the audience will take from the movie:

“What I find really powerful about the movie is it asks us to be awake and to be alive. A lot of the problems we face in relationships and with the environment and with all sorts of things coming our way is that we’re asleep at the wheel. This movie is really saying, ‘Wake up. Your life is precious, and if you take it for granted, you’re going to lose it.”

For the director, the characters are the most important part of the story and that’s why he needed some really extraordinary performers to get into the complex shoes of Junior and Hen. Ronan has been delivering stunning performances since she was only nine years old and debuted on television. Movies like The Lovely Bones, Lady Bird, Little Women or her collaborations with Wes Anderson have put her at the top of Hollywood’s most acclaimed young stars.

Mescal, for his part, has recently taken the industry by storm after debuting in the 2020’s limited series Normal People, and his future is looking even brighter after his performance on A24’s Aftersun, which earned him his first Oscar nomination. The actor will soon be starring in his first major blockbuster by playing Lucius in Ridley Scott’s Gladiator 2, which began filming before the SAG-AFTRA strike and is currently on pause.

Foe is set to hit theaters on October 6, and will later debut on Amazon Prime Video globally.
