The Crow Reboot News Sparks Backlash with Brandon Lee Fans

It actor Bill Skarsgard has been tapped to play Eric Draven in a reimagining of The Crow, and the news was not exactly met with the original film’s fan base with open arms. In the first movie, released in 1994, the late Brandon Lee starred as Draven in a performance that is widely considered to be iconic, forever making Lee synonymous with Draven. Many fans feel that The Crow is perfect as it is, never able to be matched and therefore making a reboot doomed to fail from the start.

Something else fans have taken issue with is that the news of Skarsgard’s casting in the reboot, which will be directed by Rupert Sanders (Snow White and the Huntsman), was broken on April 1, just one day after the 29th anniversary of Lee’s death. While wrapping up his final scenes for the film during production in 1993, Lee was tragically killed when the prop gun used for filming was loaded with improperly-made dummy rounds. It’s eerily similar to what happened with Halyna Hutchins on the set of Alec Baldwin’s Western Rust back in October.

There have been many voicing their opinion that this reboot should not happen. Others are more open to the idea, especially with a great actor like Skarsgard in the role, but still argue that he should be playing an original character rather than Eric Draven. In any case, the news has gotten a lot of people weighing in on social media.

“No, just no,” one fan wrote on Twitter. “I love Bill, he’s a fabulous actor, but The Crow does not need to be remade. Brandon Lee was perfection. The cast & music perfection. The story perfection. There exsist a million stories that would make great movies, choose one of them.”

Another fan said, “Ok I love Bill Skarsgard but, NO, NO, NO!!!! The Crow is fine the way it is! This is Hollywood once again admitting they are afraid to try anything new. Also, this is such an insult to Brandon Lee’s legacy! STOP THIS MADDNESS!”

“Extremely bad taste to announce that The Crow reboot is going ahead, merely a day after the 29th anniversary of Brandon Lee’s passing,” another Lee fan laments. “Truly there are just some films that should not be remade, and The Crow is one of them.”

The Crow Reboot Has Been in Development for Many Years

For what it’s worth, many fans may also know not to be holding their breath just yet for a new reboot to actually get made. There have been attempts for many years to reboot the franchise, with actors like Luke Evans and Tom Hiddleston screen testing for the role at different points. Director Corin Hardy came close to making it happen with Jason Momoa in the role, but that planned reboot also fell through. Bill Skarsgard is coming into a new attempt with Rupert Sanders directing, but time will tell if this is the one to see the light of day.
