The Hurt Locker Getting 4K, Blu-ray SteelBook With Bonus Content

Thirteen years since its world premiere at the Venice International Film Festival back in 2008, The Hurt Locker is now getting a brand new 4K Blu-ray SteelBook next month. The film tackled the emotional and psychological reactions to the stress of combat of American soldiers during the Iraq war. The all-new 4K Blu-ray SteelBook release for The Hurt Locker comes from Lionsgate and Best Buy. You can check out the official first look at the SteelBook for the award-winning film below.

The Hurt Locker is a 2008 American war thriller film written by Mark Boal. Directed by Academy Award winner Kathryn Bigelow (2012, Best Picture, Zero Dark Thirty), the critically acclaimed film THE HURT LOCKER features Academy Award nominee Jeremy Renner (2010, Best Supporting Actor, The Town), Anthony Mackie (Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Endgame, TV’s “Altered Carbon”), Brian Geraghty (The Guardian, Flight, TV’s “Chicago P.D.”), Primetime Emmy Award winner Guy Pearce (2011, Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Miniseries or Movie, TV’s “Mildred Pierce”), Academy Award nominee Ralph Fiennes (1996, Best Actor, The English Patient), and Golden Globe nominee Evangeline Lily (2007, Best Television Actress – Drama Series, TV’s “Lost”). The Hurt Locker first premiered at the 2008 Venice International Film Festival before it was released in the United States on June 26, 2009.

The film earned near-universal acclaim from critics, who praised Kathryn Bigelow’s directing, Jeremy Renner’s performance, writing, editing, and action sequences. The Hurt Locker was nominated for nine Academy Awards and won six of those, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay. It was also the first of two Best Picture winners to have been directed by a woman (the second was Nomadland), and Kathryn Bigelow is one of only two women to win Best Director (the other being Chloe Zhao for Nomadland). In 2020, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant”.

The official synopsis for The Hurt Locker reads: “Following the death of their well-respected Staff Sergeant in Iraq, Sergeant JT Sanborn and Specialist Owen Eldridge find their Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit saddled with a very different team leader. Staff Sergeant William James is an inveterate risk-taker who seems to thrive on war, but there’s no denying his gift for defusing bombs.” The film was shot in Jordan, which is within miles of the Iraqi border, to achieve Kathryn Bigelow’s goal of authenticity. Iraqi refugees were also used for extras and the cast worked in the intense heat of the Middle East.

Featuring all-new artwork by Olivia Barrett, The Hurt Locker will be available on 4K Ultra HD SteelBook at Best Buy for the suggested retail price of $27.99. The new Steelbook release will also include several special features, such as: audio commentary with director Kathryn Bigelow and writer Mark Boal, behind-the-scenes footage, and an image gallery. Sales in the United States for the film’s original DVD and Blu-ray release back in 2010 topped off at $30 million. The Hurt Locker 4K and Blu-ray release will be available on February 22, 2022, exclusively at Best Buy.
