They/Them Trailer Shows Horrors at Conversion Camp

Peacock has just released a new trailer for their upcoming original slasher They/Them. As seen in the trailer below, They/Them revolves around a group of LGBTQ+ youth who attend Camp Whistler, a conversion camp that will lead them to gain “a new sense of freedom.” As if the creepy camp director (played by Kevin Bacon) and exploring “traditional gender roles” wasn’t scary enough for the camp-goers, they also have to contend with a killer’s presence on campus.

To the surprise of the attending youth, Whistler Camp doesn’t rely on religious fear-mongering in order to convert them. Rather, a look at an unsettling session with the camp’s therapist (played by Carrie Preston) shows psychological manipulation as she persuades a youth that their gender identity is a call for attention from their parents.

The horror film, which joins the growing list of films with social commentary themes, features an impressive ensemble cast. They/Them stars Kevin Bacon (Mystic River), Carrie Preston (Claws) as Cora, the camp’s licensed therapist and Owen’s wife, and Anna Chlumsky (Inventing Anna) as the new camp medic.

The young cast that plays the camp-goers is made up of Theo Germaine (The Politician) as Jordan, a transgender and non-binary camper from a religious background whose looking towards emancipation if the camp isn’t successful; Quei Tann (How to Get Away with Murder), as Alexandra, a transgender woman whose given an option to attend camp or leave her home; Austin Crute (Booksmart), as Toby, a gay camper whose presence at camp guarantees a trip to New York paid by his parents; Monique Kim (Looks That Kill), as Veronica, a bisexual camper looking for self-acceptance; Anna Lore (All American), as Kim, a closeted lesbian camp-goer; Cooper Koch (Less than Zero), as Stu, an athlete who feels he won’t succeed at his goals as an openly gay man; and Darwin del Fabro (Novo Mundo) as Gabriel, a sensitive young man, tired of being bullied.

In a previous press statement, Logan discussed what he hopes viewers take away from the young cast:

“When people walk away from the movie, I hope they’re going to remember the incredible love that these kids have for each other and how that love needs to be protected and celebrated.”
