Tomb Raider Movie in the Works, Will Connect to Video Games and Prime Video Series

A new Tomb Raider cinematic universe is now in the planning stages that will branch across film, TV, and video games.

Shortly after it was reported that a Tomb Raider series is in development at Amazon, new word has come in that there’s much more to come from the franchise. THR reports that a new Tomb Raider movie is also in development alongside the series, and the plan is for them to be connected as part of the same cinematic universe. There are also plans to develop at least one tie-in video game for this new Tomb Raider universe, spanning the story across no less than three separate mediums.

It’s unclear if the idea is for Lara Croft to be the central character in all three mediums, or if another protagonist would lead the way in the TV show and/or video game. There’s not much else that’s yet been revealed about this new plan for Tomb Raider, but it’s noted in the report that the deal is said to be “among the largest commitments at Amazon,” comparable to the company spending $250 million to acquire the rights to The Lord of the Rings.

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

It was previously revealed that Phoebe Waller-Bridge had been hired to write the Tomb Raider series, lobbying for the job as a fan of the franchise. However, she is not attached to the film or video game in any way at this time, and seem to be focusing solely on the TV show. It’s also been noted that Waller-Bridge isn’t going to play Lara Croft in the series, limiting her involvement to a behind-the-scenes role. There’s no word yet on who could end up playing the role of the iconic adventurer, who has been played by Angelina Jolie and Alicia Vikander in previous live-action adaptations.

Tomb Raider Gets Rebooted for a New Cinematic Universe

Warner Bros.

Tomb Raider spawned with the original video game in 1996. The video game struck a chord with gamers, launching a franchise with continued popularity. With ambitious plans for an all-new cinematic universe that will branch a Tomb Raider story across film, TV, and video games, perhaps the franchise still has yet to hit its peak, but fans will just have to wait and see how it all turns out when the video game adaptation arrives in its various forms. Will this be a response to The Last of Us becoming such a hit on HBO?

It’s not yet clear when the Tomb Raider movie or Prime Video series will arrive. As for the video game, which was announced in December when it wasn’t yet clear that it’d be part of a planned cinematic universe, it is currently in development from Amazon Games and Crystal Dynamics.
