Why True Detective and Silence of the Lambs are the Same According to Jodie Foster

Summary

has been praised as the best season since the original, thanks to its supernatural direction.
  • Jodie Foster felt an immediate connection to the script, similar to her experience with
    The Silence of the Lambs
    .
  • Night Country
‘s divergence into the supernatural has successfully recaptured audience attention and received strong reviews.

True Detective: Night Country continues to unravel its mysteries with its penultimate episode, and ahead of the season’s conclusion, stars Jodie Foster and Kali Reis got together to take part in a roundtable interview. The series is the first major TV role for Foster, but appearing on the small screen in this dark and sinister tale has something in common with the actress’ role as Clarice Starling in 1991’s The Silence of the Lambs – her immediate connection to the material.

This season of True Detective has been widely praised as the best since the first season back in 2014, even if the show’s creator has been quite vocal in voicing his lack of love for the more supernatural direction of this new story. As per CBR, Foster felt the same about the script for Night Country as she did for Jonathan Demme’s classic Hannibal Lecter movie. She said:

“I knew the second that I read the book for The Silence of the Lambs, I ran around figuring out how I co

uld buy it so that I could make it myself. I knew immediately and once [The Silence of the Lambs screenwriter] Ted Tally wrote that first draft, that was pretty much the draft that got greenlit and made. Once [director] Jonathan Demme came on board, he brought on everybody else, everyone said yes, and we did the best work of our life.

I think there’s a magical component to that. It all came from the text, and it all came from that Thomas Harris novel. It’s the same thing with this. By the first episode, on Page 35, I was like ‘this is it.’ All the dominoes fell from there, from Issa [Lopez] on. Everybody kept saying yes, including HBO being so supportive. I’ve worked with streamers before, they can be difficult to handle, but I think we had a really charmed experience and that’s because the text was there.”

True Detective Recaptured Audience Attention with Night Country

HBO

It can be difficult for a show with an excellent debut to carry that success forward into future seasons, and when adding in the anthology format of True Detective, with completely new casts being drafted in each season, that becomes even trickier.

Despite the original season, led by Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, scoring almost perfect approval ratings, the subsequent seasons, which included strong talent such as Colin Farrell, Rachel McAdams, and Mahershala Ali, failed to gain the same praise. However, Night Country’s divergence from a grounded crime drama into an atmospheric supernatural one has been hugely successful in bringing audiences back to the franchise and gaining strong reviews to boot.

With an approval rating of 93% on Rotten Tomatoes, Night Country has come close to matching the original season as a standout entry in the series. Where the series goes from here is not yet known, but it would be foolish to completely turn its back on the elements introduced this season that have delivered its biggest wins.
