Willem Dafoe Expresses Willingness to Reprise Green Goblin Role in Third ‘Spider-Man’ Film

Willem Dafoe, who portrayed the iconic villain Green Goblin in the original Spider-Man trilogy, recently expressed interest in reprising the character in another Spider-Man film if the conditions are right.

“If everything was right, sure,” Dafoe said in an interview with Inverse. “I mean, that’s a great role. I liked the fact that it’s a double role both times. Twenty years ago, and fairly recently, both times [were] very different experiences, but I had a good time on both.”

Dafoe’s portrayal of Green Goblin in the 2002 film is generally regarded as one of the most memorable depictions of a comic book villain on film. Since his previous appearance in the 2021 film Spider-Man: No Way Home, fans have speculated about his more expanded return to the Green Goblin character.

While Dafoe did not confirm any participation in any upcoming film, he did acknowledge the potential of his return in the future: “I love these films and I love all of the different series,” Maguire said. “If these guys called me and said, ‘Would you show up tonight to hang out and goof around?’ or ‘Would you show up to do this movie or read a scene or do a Spider-Man thing?’ it would be a ‘yes!’ Because why wouldn’t I want to do that?”

Dafoe’s enthusiasm for the part and willingness to return to the character after all these years attests to the character’s lasting impact. Fans will surely be excited to see him reprise the role.

Willem Dafoe Expresses His Disapproval of the CGI In Spider-Man: No Way Home

Sony Pictures Releasing

Willem Dafoe, who played the iconic Green Goblin in the Spider-Man series, recently shared his thoughts on the CGI used in Spider-Man: No Way Home. According to Dafoe, the film’s heavy reliance on CGI detracted from the authenticity of the characters and their portrayals.

According to Dafoe, computer-generated imagery (CGI) can be a helpful tool for improving visual effects, but it should not be used in place of genuine acting. The actor added that the most essential element of any film is the connection between the audience and the characters. This connection is best achieved through powerful performances and realistic portrayals. When asked if he had been de-aged in Spider-Man: No Way Home, Dafoe stated: “…Yeah, there was a couple of shots that were really fuzzy. I thought it was silly, because the de-aging thing, they don’t have down yet. And what’s the point? I don’t look that much older, I don’t think, anyway. It’s the creams.”

Dafoe’s comments on Spider-Man: No Way Home’s CGI come at a time when many fans and reviewers have praised the film’s visual effects and action scenes. However, Dafoe’s acting expertise adds an important dimension to the conversation, emphasizing the importance of balancing visual effects with strong performances.

Despite his criticism of the film’s use of CGI, Dafoe commended it overall, particularly for its exploration of loss and redemption themes. He also expressed appreciation for the opportunity to reprise his role as the Green Goblin, a beloved character among Spider-Man fans.
