25 Halloween-Themed Hip-Hop Songs to Soundtrack Your Weekend

Geto Boys, “Mind Playing Tricks On Me”

Though this track may not be about Halloween in a thematic sense, the Geto Boys describe a lot of feelings that are associated with the holiday. Specifically, paranoia, fear, and stress. Not to mention, Bushwick Bill sets the scene by saying that their upcoming weekend was when the ghostly day would take place, and they planned to go trick-or-treating. However, instead of stopping by houses to retrieve candy, they were robbing children of the goodies they had. This prompted a law enforcer to approach them, and a fight ensued. It was a difficult one, as the cop was much taller than them. They eventually got the upper hand, only for Bill to realize that he wasn’t with the Geto Boys, there was no cop, and it wasn’t even Halloween weekend; he was simply experiencing psychosis. This story may be scarier than any mask or haunted house.

DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince, “A Nightmare On My Street”

Busta Rhymes, “Gimme Some More”

This record itself doesn’t have much to do with Halloween, outside of Busta sampling the opening theme to Psycho. The visual, however, takes it to another level. The Flipmode rapper becomes a blue monster and chases a woman. Later, he takes on the role of a boxer, stockbroker, police officer, and more. Busta Bust might have been the inspiration for college-aged women who get multiple costumes each year.

Method Man, Carlton Fisk, Streetlife, Blue Raspberry, Inspectah Deck & RZA, “Mr. Sandman”

Method Man assembled a cast of terrifyingly good artists for “Mr. Sandman,” namely Carlton Fisk, Streetlife, Blue Raspberry, Inspectah Deck, and RZA. The title is a nod to The Chordettes’ 1954 record of the same name, which has been featured in countless horror films throughout the subsequent decades. The Wu-Tang Clan members kept the connection alive, sprinkling a few references to other slashers across the song, such as Silence Of The Lambs and Valentine. Otherwise, the dream they’re bringing is this collection of top-tier wordplay.

Ice Cube, “Dr. Frankenstein”

Ice Cube takes on the Dr. Frankenstein character in this 1998 record, likening his innovation of gangsta rap to the creation of a monster. He presents an adversarial disposition, calling out everyone who tried to mimic his style of rap but messed up the formula; no one can do it like the original. He ends his third verse with a firm statement: “So all you gotta do is focus/ And see that I’m the f–kin’ locest with this hocus pocus.” Gangsta rap would, of course, become a force of nature in and out of the industry, with the police and government trying to stop its rise. Dr. Cube made an influential monster.

Offset, “Nightmare”

Offset joined forces with 21 Savage and Metro Boomin for their surprise Halloween mixtape Without Warning in 2017. One of the standout tracks was Set’s second solo effort “Nightmare,” where he compares his paper chase to the threat of Freddy Krueger. Throughout the song, he warns potential hindrances that he has the means to take care of them, almost as if they should sleep with one eye open if they cross him. As we know, Krueger’s victims all suffer their demise when they fall asleep, and Offset paints this picture in the simple yet effective chorus. “Yeah, Freddy Krueger, give ‘em a nightmare/ Soon as you close your eyes, ni–a we right there,” he raps. However, his advantage is that he can get his opps whether they’re asleep or not. “Come in the middle of the night like it’s a nightmare/ You open your eyes, not dreaming, ni–a, we right there.”

Fabolous & Jadakiss, “F vs J Intro”

Fabolous and Jadakiss offered their own take on Freddy vs Jason with their 2017 collaborative project Friday On Elm Street. The intro dives fully into the concept, with the opening being a woman lying awake because she fears Krueger, but also seeing Jason Voorhees in the distance. Fab kicks the record off, rapping with the precision of Freddy’s claw slashes and even shouting out the villain at the end. Jada’s verse feels more sinister and plodding, much like the way Voorhees somehow always catches his victims despite never needing to run. Each bar lands like a dismembering machete swing. It was a creative and chilling effort by the two New York wordsmiths.

OutKast Featuring Kelis, “Dracula’s Wedding”

Doug E. Fresh & The Get Fresh Crew, “Spirit”

Doug E. Fresh and The Get Fresh Crew contributed “Spirit” to the Ghostbusters II soundtrack. They acknowledge the many ways people interact with spirits, whether that be hearing them or even fearing them. However, they believe that people should embrace them because it will help uncover their true selves. Throughout the track, they nod to the band of ghost expellers and how they can help rid the world of the spirits causing negativity. The strength of the song is its vivid imagery and how well it appeals to people’s emotions. It almost sounds deeper than just talking about ghosts, and more so, getting at what goes on in the real world.

Geto Boys, “Chuckie”

“Chuckie” is a solo effort by Bushwick Bill. Ganksta N-I-P was inspired to write it after watching Tom Holland’s Child’s Play. The record opens with the iconic “Hi, I’m Chuckie, wanna play?” before a barrage of graphic bars and descriptions follow. Needless to say, Bill and N-I-P did the motion picture justice with the depths of evil conveyed in the lyrics.

Flatlinerz, “Live Evil”

The Flatlinerz left nothing to the imagination with “Live Evil.” The group, which was responsible for introducing the horrorcore genre in 1994, repeated the refrain in the intro before flipping it in the chorus. “We get so live (evil), Live (evil)/ It’s the dark side, we came to get life,” they said. Their verses cover demons lurking, hanging out with the deceased, Dr. Jekyll, and allude to what Red Rum spells backwards. There may be no musical group that leans into the elements of horror and death as the Flatlinerz did.

DMX, “Damien”

DMX’s “Damien” was as cinematic as it was salient. He takes on multiple characters in the 1998 cut, but the most important of them all is the song’s namesake. Damien entices X with a life of luxury and prestige, but forces him to do heinous things to get them. Over time, Damien is revealed to be the Devil in hiding, and the Yonkers’ rapper gains awareness of how far he is being pushed to do things out of character. The true turning point is when Damien tries to get him to betray his friends, which makes DMX rethink the agreement they made. The record has elements of Faust and The Omen, but the way he presents it through song makes it all hit in a hair-raising way.

E-40 Featuring Tech N9ne, Brotha Lynch Hung, “Zombie”

E-40 tapped Tech N9ne and Brotha Lynch Hung, two artists who embraced horrorcore, for this record dedicated to the zombies, monsters, ghouls, and fiends. They don’t go too far into Halloween or any movie references, but rather, they present themselves as the variety of things that go bump in the night due to their lyrical mastery. There are countless images of violence or terror, but what should be feared the most is daring to try and get on the microphone with them.

Big L, “Devil’s Son”

“Devil’s Son” finds Big L sharing a dream he had where he was the spawn of satan. The chorus, manned by Nasty Nas, is an audacious reflection on how, when he was 12 years old, he went to purgatory for punching Jesus Christ. Genuinely, who would dare say such a thing besides the son of the devil? L continues the narrative, describing how he beat a kid to death with a wooden spoon in pre-school, hung a man from a chandelier, and took no pity on the disabled either. These bars are genuinely fear-inducing, whether read or heard.

Brotha Lynch Hung, “Meat Cleaver”

Brotha Lynch Hung’s “Meat Cleaver” appeared on his 2013 LP Mannibalector, which was a spooky concept album. This particular record was more free-flowing, but not at the expense of his signature gory lyricism. The most disturbing aspect of the track would have to be how he repeatedly describes taking lives and then seasoning, cooking, and eating the dead bodies. There are some particularly concerning bars that we won’t get into, but Brotha Lynch Hung leaves no stone unturned when it comes to taking on the role of a horror villain.

Tyler, The Creator, “Transylvania”

Tyler, The Creator’s early music was an acquired taste due to how unfiltered he was. 2011’s “Transylvania” is no different, as he takes on the role of Dracula when it comes to his interactions with women. There’s blood and violence galore, and even a hilarious “F–k Buffy” line. One thing is for sure: given the content of this record, it is no surprise that he does not perform much of his older catalogue anymore.

Whodini, “Haunted House Of Rock”

Whodini welcomed listeners into their “Haunted House Of Rock” in 1983. True to the nature of those scary exhibits, they reiterate that people should enter at their own risk because some of the people who go in don’t come out. Dr. Jekyll, Mr. Hyde, the Addams Family, and the Munster Five are all part of the guest list. Fortunately, they infused a lot of humor and fun into this song, watering down just how frightening it could be. It is like the Scary Movie of Halloween songs.

Fat Boys, “Are You Ready For Freddy”

The Fat Boys distanced themselves from the deviance of previous Halloween cuts on this list and instead just told the story of Freddy Krueger and Elm Street. They deserve credit for their commitment, as the record has five total verses, interludes, and an outro. The most impressive part of them all was the fact that Freddy himself performed on the track. It wasn’t long, but as we know, Freddy doesn’t ever need to say too much.

21 Savage, “Spiral”

Despite 21 Savage being so beloved, much of his lyrical content could be considered horrorcore, with the graphic descriptions of how he and his crew take care of their opps. Thus, it made so much sense that he was tapped to be part of the Spiral soundtrack in 2021. The title track was a flip of Charlie Clouser’s “Hello Zepp” which was a crucial aspect of the 2004 Saw film that kicked off this series. “Call me Saw ‘cause I laugh when I body sh-t” may be the most “21 Savage” line ever written. “Spiral” showed that they couldn’t have picked a more fitting rapper to be part of this.

Lil Uzi Vert, “Werewolf”

Lil Uzi Vert and Bring Me The Horizon describe the curse of being supernatural on “Werewolf.” He admits to envying daywalkers because he is bound to the moon, which causes him to shapeshift at night. Oli Sykes explains how he has already run through his nine lives and believes he could never make it to heaven because of what he has done. However, the darkness ended up becoming a haven for him. The record succeeds at making you sympathize with what both are going through; they may have to do bad things because of their curses, but they don’t intend to.

Three 6 Mafia, “Now I’m Hi Pt. 3”

Three 6 Mafia are some of the coolest rappers ever, and it is especially shown on “Now I’m Hi Pt. 3,” where they make several 666 references. Playa Fly raps in a cloud of smoke about women possessed by the devil, the late Gangsta Boo positions herself as the one everyone should fear the most, and Lord Infamous dies before coming back to life even more vicious. It’s like horrorcore, but with southern swag.

Gravediggaz, “Diary Of A Madman”

Gravediggaz’s “Diary Of A Madman” is aptly named. It tells the story of a man made up of multiple people within who has to play a role different than who he is for society. The man is evil by nature, but also has good qualities and has to wrestle with that mental tug-of-war. It is an extended narrative describing horrific things he endured that make him this way, and even becomes boastful. Ultimately, the evil succeeds in consuming him, and he realizes that his story wasn’t going to end any other way.

Gravediggaz, “Nowhere To Run, Nowhere”

On “Nowhere To Run, Nowhere,” RZA becomes The RZArector. He describes himself as a “sick lunatic with the devilish poem” and a “bat in the night.” However, he is also willing to tangle with devils whom he hangs from a certain body part beneath his torso. The Grym Reaper’s verse isn’t as spooky, but he still gets bars off. The Gatekeeper, however, describes himself like a shark in the water when he gets near blood. Ultimately, this is all a metaphor for their approach to the rap game, but they brilliantly employ various horror elements to drive the point home.

DMX, “The Omen (Damien II)”

“The Omen (Damien II)” is the midpoint in DMX’s Damien series. In this part of the story, X is healing from a gunshot wound and decides he wants nothing to do with the demon. However, he learns that the police killed his cousin and has to let bygones be bygones with Damien to avenge his fallen relative. After getting his payback, he attempts to lay low, but Damien just won’t leave him alone. Now, the antagonist wants to claim his soul, which he sold in the first installment of the series. X’s only recourse is to call on God and ask for his help. Marilyn Manson being featured on this record helps to truly put it over as a gripping tale of horror that is applicable to real life.
