CJ Stowklyn on Culture, Control, and the Evolution of ABSORBED6

As ComplexCon celebrates a landmark decade, culture and streetwear continue to evolve at a blistering pace, driven largely by visionary multi-hyphenates who refuse to stay in a single lane. Enter CJ Stowklyn, an independent artist, designer, and founder whose work bridges underground music, high-end apparel, and experiential lifestyle ventures. Ahead of his major showcase in Los Angeles, we sat down with Stowklyn to discuss the strategy behind launching the physical ABSORBED6 activation, the realities of maintaining total creative control in today’s entertainment landscape, and synchronizing multi-platform release calendars.

Dive into our conversation below as CJ shares his roadmap for building a lasting brand, bridging digital reach with physical experiences, and what comes next.

ComplexCon is celebrating its 10th anniversary as the premier culture and streetwear festival. From an entertainment and business standpoint, why was 2026 the exact right moment to launch the ABSORBED6 physical activation?

2026 felt like the right moment because ABSORBED6 has reached a point where it needed to exist beyond a screen. I’ve spent years building the music, the audience and the visual identity, and ComplexCon’s 10th anniversary creates the right environment to introduce the brand to people who are already connected to culture, fashion and music. It’s not just a launch for me, it’s the first real-world statement of what ABSORBED6 can become.

You operate as an independent artist and founder, maintaining creative and operational control over both your music and fashion endeavors. What are the greatest advantages and challenges of remaining independent in today’s entertainment landscape?

The biggest advantage is freedom. I can make a decision based on what I believe in creatively instead of waiting for multiple people to approve it. The challenge is that the responsibility is completely mine too, financing, marketing, scheduling, partnerships and execution all come with the territory. But I actually like that pressure because it forces me to understand every side of what I’m building.

Transitioning seamless creative energy between songwriting, screen acting, and streetwear design requires distinct workflows. How do you structure your creative process when working across different mediums?

I don’t try to force myself to create the same way every time. Music might start with a sound or emotion, acting starts with understanding a character, and fashion can start with a silhouette or even a texture. I give each medium its own process, but I keep the same visual and emotional language running through everything so it still feels like me.

Collaborating with established acts such as Matt OX and BigBabyGucci helped define your musical career track. How do strategic creative partnerships—in both music and fashion—help elevate an independent brand’s market reach?

Collaboration gives independent artists access to worlds they might not reach on their own. When I work with another artist or designer, I’m not just thinking about the name attached to the project, I’m thinking about how our audiences, aesthetics and ideas can overlap naturally. The right collaboration can introduce people to your world without having to explain it to them.

Your press release emphasizes building a brand that “belongs in the culture for years to come” rather than just generating short-term buzz. What is your strategic roadmap for scaling ABSORBED6 post-ComplexCon?

ComplexCon is really the starting point, not the finish line. After this, I want to focus on tightening the product, expanding the storytelling around the brand and being selective about who ABSORBED6 works with. I’d rather grow it at a pace where the identity stays strong than release something every month just to stay visible.

The launch of WET AF Water alongside ABSORBED6 demonstrates a multi-brand lifestyle venture. How do you analyze consumer crossover between streetwear apparel and lifestyle products?

I look at both as lifestyle extensions. Someone might discover ABSORBED6 through the clothing and then connect with WET AF through the experience surrounding it, or it can work the other way around. The common denominator is culture and presentation, we’re taking something ordinary and making people interact with it differently.

The September 22nd release of “Back to Me” (feat. Cherrypopsoda) represents a cross-promotional release strategy alongside your ComplexCon appearance. How do you synchronize release calendars across music and product launches?

I try to make the releases feel connected instead of making them compete with each other. If I have a song coming out, I’m already thinking about the visual language, content and experiences surrounding it. With ComplexCon happening around “Back to Me,” it gives the music another physical environment to live in while giving people something else to discover.

Having toured extensively in both the U.S. and the U.K., how do international audience dynamics differ when it comes to music reception and fashion preferences?

They definitely have different energies. In the U.S., I’ve noticed people can connect very quickly with the visual side of what I’m doing, while the U.K. has a really strong relationship with underground music and fashion culture. Touring taught me that you can’t assume everyone is going to experience your work the same way. You have to pay attention to the environment you’re actually in.

Social media metrics show a combined reach of nearly 200,000 followers across your platforms. How do you convert digital audience engagement into physical attendance and direct product sales at events?

The goal is to make the online audience feel like there’s a reason to show up in person. A post can introduce you to ABSORBED6, but the physical activation lets people actually touch the product, see the details and meet the people behind it. I think that transition from scrolling to physically experiencing something is becoming more important.

High-fashion aesthetics are increasingly merging with mainstream entertainment and hip-hop. Where do you see the crossover between independent music and high-end streetwear heading in the next few years?

I think the separation between artist and designer is going to keep getting smaller. Artists are already building entire visual ecosystems around themselves, and fashion is becoming another form of world-building. Independent artists have an advantage because they can experiment without having to fit into an established formula.

Looking beyond ComplexCon 2026 and your upcoming single, what are the next major milestones on the horizon for CJ Stowklyn as both an artist and an entrepreneur?

I’m focused on expanding both sides without losing myself in the process. Musically, there’s a lot more new material and collaborations coming, and with ABSORBED6 I want to move from a debut activation into something people recognize as a real, lasting brand. I’m also interested in acting, more live experiences and building businesses that can exist beyond just my name. The bigger goal is to keep creating things that connect with people in different ways.
