Marmozets part ways with bassist Sam Macintyre due to “relationship becoming unworkable”

Marmozets have confirmed that guitarist-turned-bassist Sam Macintyre will no longer be part of the band due to their “relationship becoming unworkable”.

Sam is the brother of singer Becca Bottomley (née Macintyre) and drummer Josh, and has been a part of the line-up since the Yorkshire band formed in 2007.

His departure comes following them releasing ‘CO.WAR.DICE’, their first album in eight years, in May and playing headline dates and festivals including Download, 2000Trees and more over the summer.

Taking to Instagram, Becca, Josh and Jack – guitarist and Becca’s husband – shared that the line-up change comes due to issues with their dynamic.

“We’re taking the time, while on a little break, to inform you that we have parted ways with Sam Macintyre due to the relationship becoming unworkable despite our best intentions and attempts,” the update read.

“Please be assured that this decision is in the best interests of everyone involved. “Thank you for all the love and support and we’ll see you soon.”

The specifics of his exit have not yet been revealed.

The announcement comes shortly after the band opened for Biffy Clyro earlier this month, joining the Scottish rockers for what was their biggest show to date at London’s Finsbury Park. Others on the line-up included Wavves, Don Broco and Nothing But Thieves.

Before then, the Bingley alt-rockers spoke to NME about their ‘CO.WAR.DICE’ album at the start of the year, and explained why they were ready to make their comeback after eight years away.

In the interview, the singer said that while it was “at first” difficult for the band to rekindle their dynamic after all that time, she felt that they had reached a point where they were feeling “stronger than ever”.

“We’d all been living our own lives. We went to record last December and there were some real moments. You forget how one another are, but we always come together and put family first to sort stuff out,” she told NME.

“It has fixed a lot and our bond is stronger than ever. The beautiful thing about Marmozets is that I’m the oldest of seven, and with the huge family we have of the Bottomleys and the Macintyres, we wouldn’t be as close if it weren’t for the band.”

The singer continued: “We used to think the band dragged us apart and that we weren’t communicating, but it’s actually the opposite. We’ve found a lot of freedom and love for one another through this process. Getting the band back together has been really healing, and I never thought I’d say that.”

Released on May 22, ‘CO.WAR.DICE’ was the third album from Marmozets, following on from 2014 debut ‘The Weird And Wonderful Marmozets’ and 2018’s ‘Knowing What You Know Now’.
