Betts: Dodgers have ‘kept their promise’ about trying to win

The Los Angeles Dodgers are baseball’s busiest team this offseason, and star Mookie Betts is impressed by the franchise’s continued commitment to contending for championships.

“When I signed here, I told them I always want to win, and they promised me,” Betts said Saturday, according to Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times. “They’ve kept their promise. … They’ve kept their word to me. That’s why I love being a Dodger.”

The Dodgers have spent over $1 billion this winter, adding Shohei Ohtani, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, and Tyler Glasnow, among others.

Betts knows every team is going to be gunning for the Dodgers with the star power they’ve assembled in the offseason, but he’s ready to embrace the challenge.

“Every game is going to be the other team’s World Series,” Betts told Sportsnet LA. “It is what it is. It’s what we signed up for. We have to embrace that and then we’ve got to go attack and be who we on paper are.”

Betts inked a 12-year, $365-million contract extension in July 2020 after he was acquired in a blockbuster trade with the Boston Red Sox.

The 31-year-old has been excellent in four seasons with the Dodgers, hitting 113 home runs with a .912 OPS and helping the club to a World Series victory in 2020.

Betts is expected to be the Dodgers’ everyday second baseman in 2024 after spending the majority of his 10-year career as an outfielder.
