The BCCI on Wednesday praised outgoing chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar, saying his tenure was marked by “truly special moments for Indian cricket.”
“A tenure marked by some truly special moments for Indian cricket — three ICC trophies, two Asia Cup titles and back-to-back Asian Games Gold medals, along with a run to the 2023 ODI World Cup final,” BCCI said in a post on X.
“Thank you, Ajit Agarkar, for your commitment, conviction and contribution as Chairman of the Men’s Selection Committee. Wishing you the very best for the journey ahead,” BCCI added.
Agarkar’s tenure ended on October 4. Former India spinner Pragyan Ojha is currently serving as the interim chairman of selectors, with Shiv Sundar Das, Ajay Ratra and RP Singh the other members of the men’s selection committee.
Earlier in the day, India head coach Gautam Gambhir also praised Agarkar, saying “history would be kinder” to him and that his belief in “team first” played an important role in India winning three ICC trophies during his tenure.
“Dear Ajit Bhai, an absolute honour to work with you. Those 3 ICC trophies are testimony of your conviction: Team first & Team ahead, always.. I must say, History will be kinder to you. Thank you for everything. My heartfelt wishes for your future endeavours!!” Gambhir posted.
India won the 2024 and 2026 T20 World Cups and the 2025 Champions Trophy during Agarkar’s tenure. He also oversaw a period of transition that included the T20 and Test retirements of batting greats Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.
Agarkar was perceived as a ruthless selector and remained non-committal on whether Kohli and Rohit would be part of India’s plans for the 2027 ODI World Cup.
