Giants’ DeVito to start Week 10 vs. Cowboys

New York Giants quarterback Tommy DeVito will start the team’s Week 10 matchup against the Dallas Cowboys, head coach Brian Daboll announced Wednesday.

This will be the undrafted rookie’s first career start. He’ll replace Daniel Jones, who suffered a torn ACL last week against the Las Vegas Raiders.

DeVito has filled in for injured Giants quarterbacks in two games this season. He stepped in for Tyrod Taylor in Week 8 against the New York Jets, where he threw for negative-1 yard on seven attempts.

The rookie signal-caller was forced into last Sunday’s contest against the Raiders following Jones’ injury. He had more success than in his first game, throwing for 175 yards on 15 completions with one touchdown and two interceptions.

DeVito was the starting quarterback at Illinois last year before entering the NFL. He went 8-5 in 13 starts while tossing for 2,650 yards with 14 touchdowns and five interceptions.

New York signed veteran quarterback Matt Barkley to the active roster on Wednesday to be DeVito’s backup. Barkley has spent time with 12 different franchises since being selected in the fourth round of the 2013 NFL Draft.

Jones was placed on injured reserve following the torn ACL. The Giants signed the former first-round selection to a four-year, $160-million contract last offseason. He carries a $47.1-million cap hit in 2024, according to Over the Cap.

DeVito’s start on Sunday will break an NFL record for the most rookie quarterbacks to start in a single campaign, with 10 different first-year signal-callers starting across the league this season. The Giants enter their game against the Cowboys with a 2-7 record.
