Kerr: Timeout blowup with Draymond ‘not my finest hour’

Steve Kerr expressed regret over an altercation with Draymond Green that went viral during the Golden State Warriors’ 120-97 win over the Orlando Magic on Monday.

“Monday night was not my finest hour, and that was a time I needed to be calm in the huddle,” the head coach said Wednesday, according to ESPN’s Tim Bontemps. “I regret my actions in that exchange. I apologized to (Green). He apologized to me. We both apologized to the team.

“These things, they happen – especially when you get two incredibly competitive people like Dray and me. So, over the 12 years we’ve been together, this has happened occasionally, and I’m not proud of it.”

Green and Kerr were spotted having a heated conversation during a timeout with 8:31 left in the third quarter. The Warriors forward suddenly walked off toward the locker room as Kerr drew up a play for the rest of the team.

Green said postgame that he thought “it was best to remove myself” from the situation. Though Green returned to the bench soon after, Kerr said that he deliberately held him out for the final 20-plus minutes.

Golden State is unlikely to discipline Green for retreating to the locker room, ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne reported Tuesday.

Kerr added Wednesday that he still envisions the two seeing out their respective careers in the Bay Area.

“My No. 1 goal, honestly, is for him to finish his career as a Warrior with us fighting metaphorically – not literally but fighting and competing together – until we’re both gone,” Kerr said. “And I believe that’s going to happen. Because I believe in Draymond, and I believe in myself, and I believe in everything we’ve built for 12 years.”

Green, 35, is in his 14th season, all of which have been with Golden State. The four-time NBA champion is averaging 8.1 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 5.1 assists in 24 starts.
