Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk thanks former boss Arne Slot

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has paid tribute to Arne Slot after his fellow Dutchman was sacked as Reds head coach.

After replacing Jürgen Klopp in the Anfield hotseat two years ago, Slot had instant success as he steered Liverpool to just a second Premier League crown in his first season in charge.

However, a disappointing title defence and disharmony in the dressing room – with the outgoing Mohamed Salah the most outspoken – led to fans turning on Slot, who was relieved of his position on Saturday.

Van Dijk looked back at happier times as he posted in an Instagram story on Sunday: “We’ll never forget winning the Premier League in our first season together.

“Thank you, Trainer, and best of luck to you and your family for the future.”
