Matt Patricia Commits to Ohio State: What the Contract Extension Means for the Buckeyes

It’s official. Matt Patricia is staying in Columbus.

Ohio State athletic director Ross Bjork confirmed on February 23 that the Buckeyes’ defensive coordinator has agreed to a new contract, ending weeks of speculation about whether Matt Patricia might return to the NFL after just one season in the college ranks.

“He was always committed to staying here,” Bjork told The Columbus Dispatch. “I know his family loves it. His kids have fit in well. We just kept a constant dialogue before we got to an agreement with him.”

Patricia confirmed the deal himself the following day in an Instagram post, thanking Ryan Day, Bjork, and Buckeye Nation for their support. His message was simple and direct: “We love Columbus, we love the Buckeyes. We’re going to work tirelessly to continue to build the defense and go out and defend the Shoe.”

A Dominant Debut Season

The extension comes on the heels of a first year that exceeded even the most optimistic projections. Under Matt Patricia, Ohio State’s defense finished No. 1 nationally in both scoring defense (9.3 points per game) and total defense (219.1 yards per game). Those numbers represent the best marks by any FBS defense since Alabama’s 2011 unit. Patricia was also named a finalist for the Broyles Award, which honors college football’s top assistant coach.

Day spoke publicly about the deal during an interview with 10TV’s Dom Tiberi, making it clear that retaining Patricia was a priority from the start of the offseason.

“We wanted to make sure we solidified Matt moving forward,” Day said. “He did a great job this year. He certainly, from the jump, built great trust within the building with coaches, with players, and then you saw the product on the field. Really excited that we solidified his future at Ohio State.”

Day added that he wanted to give credit to Bjork and the administration for moving quickly to secure the deal: “I want to give Ross, the board and president Carter a lot of credit. We wanted to make sure we solidified Matt moving forward.”

The Timing Says Everything

Patricia’s extension was announced just one day before Ohio State’s defenders began their media sessions at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis. Multiple Buckeyes spoke glowingly about their coordinator throughout the week, with defensive end Caden Curry offering perhaps the most telling endorsement.

“We all love him, and I hope he stays at Ohio State a long time because he’s a great guy,” Curry said at the Combine.

He got his wish.

Linebacker Arvell Reese echoed the sentiment, calling Patricia “a huge reason why I played the way I play.” Safety Caleb Downs quoted Patricia’s own coaching language from the Combine podium. Defensive tackle Kayden McDonald called him “a peoples’ coach” who invested in players well beyond the meeting room. The consistency of that praise across every player who spoke in Indianapolis painted a clear picture of Patricia’s impact.

Financial terms of the new deal have not been officially released by the university. Patricia’s original contract was a three-year deal, and his new agreement is rumored to place him among the highest-paid defensive coordinators in college football.

But for Patricia, the decision clearly wasn’t about the money. It was about the fit.

What It Means Going Forward

“I really got into coaching when I left engineering to pursue my passion for working with young men,” Patricia said earlier this spring. “Really being influential in their lives and helping them grow, that’s what college coaches were for me.”

For a program that has watched coordinators come and go in recent years, Matt Patricia’s commitment provides something Ohio State hasn’t had much of lately: defensive continuity. The scheme is installed. The coaching staff is intact. And the next wave of defenders, many of whom spent 2025 learning Patricia’s system as backups, now step into expanded roles with a full year of his teaching behind them.

Ohio State’s defense will look different in 2026. Caleb Downs, Sonny Styles, Arvell Reese, and several other key contributors are headed to the NFL. But the man responsible for developing them into draft picks is staying put. And for Buckeye fans, that might be the most important roster move of the entire offseason.
