NFL exec: Bengals asked to host annual Black Friday game

The Cincinnati Bengals wanted to be a permanent fixture of the NFL’s new Black Friday game.

The Bengals petitioned to host every Black Friday game moving forward, according to the NFL’s VP of broadcast planning, Mike North.

“The Cincinnati Bengals, for instance, raised their hand. They put their hand up and said, ‘You know what, we’re interested in Black Friday. Not just in 2023, how about as a tradition? We play in Dallas and Detroit on Thanksgiving every year. How about playing in Cincinnati on Black Friday every year?’” North said Friday on “Mad Dog Sports Radio.”

However, the Bengals didn’t get their wish, as an AFC East matchup between the New York Jets and Miami Dolphins was selected as the inaugural Black Friday game.

North added that Amazon, which will broadcast the holiday game on Prime Video, contacted the NFL about possibly having one of the New York teams involved.

The NFL executive said games between the Philadelphia Eagles and New York Giants and the Bengals versus the Pittsburgh Steelers were also candidates considered for the holiday.

The Bengals will feature in four prime-time games in 2023, including a Thursday night contest against the Baltimore Ravens in Week 11.
