Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby plans to enter the NFL supplemental draft, sources told ESPN’s Pete Thamel.
Sorsby will pursue an NFL career amid legal wrangling over his NCAA eligibility.
The quarterback was set to regain eligibility for the 2026 season after a judge granted him a temporary injunction against the NCAA earlier in June. Sorsby had previously been deemed ineligible after acknowledging he gambled on sports, including betting on his own team while at Indiana.
“I am grateful for the support from my family, my Tech coaching staff, teammates, the community, and so many others who have encouraged me to address and learn more about this important issue,” Sorsby posted on Instagram. “As my journey continues, I remain fully committed to and focused on being the best I can be, both on and off the field.”
Court records show that Sorsby admitted to placing thousands of impermissible bets on pro and college sports, totaling at least $90,000 during his time at Indiana, Cincinnati, and Texas Tech.
Sorsby’s attorneys plan to withdraw their lawsuit against the NCAA on Tuesday, which would make him ineligible under the NCAA’s ruling and clear a path for him to enter the supplemental draft, a source told NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.
“Brendan Sorsby will not be part of the Texas Tech football team this fall,” Texas Tech board chair Cody Campbell said in a statement. Campbell also confirmed that the university will not seek the “return of any amounts already paid to Brendan through his NIL agreements.”
Sorsby’s decision to end his collegiate career comes on the same day the Big 12 filed a lawsuit in the U.S. District Court in Dallas seeking a court order backing the league’s ability to enforce its bylaws for potential punishment against him.
Georgia and Nebraska had indicated they wouldn’t schedule games against Texas Tech following the ruling in Sorsby’s favor.
“When Brendan’s lawsuit resulted in the granting of a temporary injunction, we found ourselves in a difficult situation,” school president Lawrence Schovanec and director of athletics Kirby Hocutt said in a joint statement. “With his health and wellness as our top priority, we supported him in spite of very different perspectives and opinions. Our position was challenged by many but our support for him never changed.”
The deadline to apply for the supplemental draft is June 22, according to MMQB’s Albert Breer. Sorsby will have a window from July 5-12 to hold a pro day and work out privately for NFL teams. The supplemental draft is expected to take place in late July.
Any NFL team can select a player in the supplemental draft by forfeiting their pick in the corresponding round the next year.
