Rex Ryan says he expects to speak with the New York Jets about their head coaching vacancy after the regular season ends, he told Jake Asman on 880 ESPN New York.
Ryan previously vouched for himself, stating in November that “nobody is better than me” for the job.
The 62-year-old coached the Jets from 2009-2014 and led them to two AFC Championship Game appearances. However, New York missed the playoffs in Ryan’s final four seasons at the helm. He holds a 46-50 record with the franchise.
The Jets are about to complete a season that spiralled into disaster despite a roster full of household names. The franchise fired head coach Robert Saleh after a 2-3 start but then lost nine of its next 11 games under interim coach Jeff Ulbrich. General manager Joe Douglas was also dismissed midseason.
New York will have to make roster decisions on the likes of quarterback Aaron Rodgers and wide receiver Davante Adams this offseason. The franchise reportedly prefers to move on from the veteran quarterback after a campaign in which he posted 24 touchdowns to 10 interceptions. The offense has averaged under 20 points per game this season.
Ryan spent two seasons with the Buffalo Bills after his Jets tenure in which he posted a 15-16 record. He has worked as an analyst for ESPN since being let go by the Bills.
