New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers joked that being released by one of the team owner’s sons would be “a great story” after reports last week emerged about how decision making is handled by the front office.
“I’ve never been released before. Being released would be a first; being released by a teenager, that would also be a first,” Rodgers said lightheartedly Monday on “The Pat McAfee Show.”
He added: “So, hey, I’m open to everything, and I find the comedy in all of it. If that happens, hey, it’s a great story.”
The Jets organization came under fire when a report stated that Jets owner Woody Johnson vetoed an offseason trade for wide receiver Jerry Jeudy because his Madden rating was too low. The decision is rumored to be evidence of influence from Johnson’s sons, Brick and Jack, in the team’s decision making.
The Jets reportedly want to move on from Rodgers after a disappointing 2024 season. The veteran acknowledged there is a reality where the franchise releases him but added he hasn’t decided whether he wants to play next year.
“I think there’s a world where they just say, ‘Hey, thank you, we’re going to go in another direction.’ … That’s a possibility. I think there’s also a possibility we’re going to wait and see who the new staff is,” Rodgers said.
He also noted that he’s open to taking a pay cut and coming back even if the Jets draft a quarterback.
Rodgers’ contract contains a $25-million bonus for 2025, per Spotrac.
In his first season back since tearing his Achilles, the 41-year-old has led New York to a 4-11 record with 24 touchdowns to eight interceptions.
