Texas football coach Johnny Nansen arrested on suspicion of DWI, Steve Sarkisian says

Overnight, Texas football coach Johnny Nansen was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated.

Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian revealed the news of Nansen’s misdemeanor DWI charge at his weekly conference Thursday. An arrest affidavit has not yet been made public, and Sarkisian said it was too early to say whether Nansen will coach this weekend against UTSA. Nansen, 52, was not at the Longhorns’ practice Thursday.

“We had an unfortunate situation last evening,” Sarkisian said. “Coach Nansen was charged with misdemeanor DWI. We obviously are aware of the situation. I’m still gathering facts. I’m still monitoring the situation. We’re obviously disappointed, but that’s all I really have on that at this time.”

After working with Sarkisian at Washington and USC, Nansen was hired at Texas ahead of the 2024 season. He currently coaches the team’s inside linebackers and owns a co-defensive coordinator title. Earlier this year, Nansen agreed to a contract extension was was set to run through the 2027 season and pay him $1.2 million annually.
