Washington State and Utah State haven’t been truly awful, but they’re struggling to win college football games.
Utah State has a win over a Troy team that blew out Southern Miss on Tuesday night, but it lost to Idaho State to start the season and dropped the Pac-12 opener at Boise State 37-18.
The Cougars won their FCS game – beating Duquesne 48-7 – but they haven’t won an FBS game under new head coach Kirby Moore, including last week’s Pac-12 opener against Fresno State 26-6.

Why Washington State Will Win
No team has thrown more picks than Utah State (10), and only two teams (Northern Illinois and Bowling Green) are scoring fewer points, averaging just 14 per game.
Washington State might be struggling to score, too, but the four losses came to Washington, Kansas State, Arizona, and Fresno State. All four defenses are decent, and eventually, the Cougar offense will start to find more of a groove with more sustained scoring drives.

Why Utah State Will Win
Washington State can’t convert on third down tries. Quarterback Caden Pinnick is experienced and can move, but against FBS teams, he and the offense are a horrendous 23% on third downs.
Utah State has slowed down on the turnovers, and that’s partly because the running game has picked up, averaging over five yards per carry in each of the last two games. Wazzu is allowing 4.7 yards per carry.

Both teams aren’t playing as well as they should. The season so far doesn’t represent either team’s best work, especially on offense.
