Yankees’ Boone suspended 1 game for ‘recent conduct’ toward umpires

New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone has been suspended one game and fined an undisclosed amount for his “recent conduct” toward umpires, Major League Baseball announced Friday.

Boone will serve his ban Friday when the Yankees host the San Diego Padres.

The ban comes less than 24 hours after Boone received his league-leading fourth ejection of the season during Thursday’s game against the Baltimore Orioles. He had to be restrained while getting in the face of multiple umpires during his nearly minute-long tirade before the fourth inning.

At one point, cameras caught home plate umpire Edwin Moscoso wiping his face after going nose to nose with Boone, suggesting that the manager may have spit on him.

Boone has been tossed 30 times in just 760 games as a big-league manager, ranking sixth among active skippers and first over the last six years. His nine ejections in 2022 were the most in a single season since Bobby Cox in 2007, per Baseball Reference.

Three of Boone’s four ejections in 2023 have come in the Yankees’ last 10 games. Despite that, the 50-year-old doesn’t believe he’s gaining any undue notoriety among umpires.

“I think I’ve earned that reputation,” Boone said Friday, according to SNY. “Do I think it’s leading to a quick hook? Not necessarily. I think last night was (a quick ejection). But that could just be a one-off. Maybe I’m delusional in that I did more than I think (Thursday). I don’t think that’s the case.

“I don’t think I’m being targeted by umpires going in, like they’re not going to tolerate certain things. I think I’m treated fairly.”
