3rd Rock from the Sun Cast Reunite 20 Years After Finale

After more than two decades since their show came to a close, the cast of 3rd Rock from the Sun has reunited. Originally premiering in 1996, the classic sitcom ran for six seasons before airing its series finale in 2001. Not very much has changed in the years since, as seen in a new photo of the four leads posted to Twitter by Kristen Johnson. You can check out the image below.

Bonnie and Terry Turner created 3rd Rock from the Sun, which followed a group of four extraterrestrials relocating to Earth to study the behavior of human beings. To fool their new friends and neighbors, they all must keep up the ruse of pretending to be a “normal” American family living in Ohio, but this comes with its challenges. It was far unlike much of the other comedy shows on the small screen during its era which helped it to stand out and enjoy its six-season run.

John Lithgow starred as Dick Solomon, the alien posing as the head of the family. In actuality, he is the High Commander and the leader of the team’s expedition to planet Earth. The other members of this little away team include Kristen Johnson as security officer Sally; Joseph Gordon-Levitt as information officer Tommy; and French Stewart as Harry, the lovable buffoon who’s recognizable from his trademark squint.

“Harry is an epic idiot, in the best sense of the term. He’s well-meaning, but he’s just so stupid,” Stewart said of the role in a Chicago Tribune interview, revealing he auditioned with that squint which helped him get the part. “It’s sort of the equivalent of your mother telling you not to make faces because they might stick that way forever. Well, I’ve now got a face that’s stuck. But it’s worth it. People respond to Harry, and the squint is probably a big part of his appeal.”

“Incredibly proud to have been a part of 3rd Rock from the Sun,” Gordon-Levitt also tweeted in February in honor of the show turning 25 this year. “Makes me so happy that new audiences continue to discover it all these years later.”

The new cast reunion photo appears to stem from a Vulture Festival appearance with the cast. Even Wayne Knight, who played Officer Don on the show, also showed up to surprise those in attendance. Jane Curtin (Dr. Mary Albright) also hopped in through Zoom to speak with the cast about their memories working on the show. Knight noted at the event that doing that kind of show today would be hard, as “society’s gotten too bizarre,” and “you couldn’t satirize it today.”

3rd Rock from the Sun might have been a product at this time, but in any case, the episodes do hold up very well. Thanks to the streaming era, it’s easier than ever for fans to go back and watch classic episodes of 3rd Rock from the Sun. They can be found on many different services for streaming as well, including Prime Video, Tubi, Pluto TV, Crackle, and Peacock.
