Alec Baldwin’s Match Game Reboot Canceled at ABC

ABC has pulled the plug on a handful of its network game shows, including the new Match Game hosted by Alec Baldwin. Per Variety, the network has canceled the Match Game reboot as well as the game shows Card Sharks, The Celebrity Dating Game, and The Hustler. Baldwin’s Match Game featured the actor as host with rotating celebrities playing along, and the reboot ultimately lasted five seasons after debuting in 2016 and premiering season 5 in 2020.

In October, Baldwin was filming the movie Rust when a tragic accident left cinematographer Halyna Hutchins dead. While that situation has resulted in ongoing controversy for Baldwin, the incident did not directly lead to Match Game getting canceled. The series has not been in production since prior to the pandemic and there were no plans set in stone to film a sixth season, and though it hadn’t been outright canceled, the writing was on the wall that the end was near.

Meanwhile, ABC did announce renewals for other game shows that did make the cut. Steve Harvey will return to host Celebrity Family Feud for its eighth season. Press Your Luck with Elizabeth Banks is also expected to return for season 4 while The $100,000 Pyramid with Michael Strahan will be coming back for season 6. Previously, ABC had already renewed Holey Moley and The Chase as well as the new mystery game show Who Do You Believe?. Supermarket Sweep, Judge Steve Harvey, To Tell the Truth, and Celebrity Wheel of Fortune remain on the bubble, as does Jeopardy National College Championship.

Alec Baldwin Has Lined Up His Next Acting Roles Alongside His Brother

NBC

Match Game might be finished, but Alec Baldwin is not. The actor has recently lined up two more roles, which will see him co-starring with brother Daniel Baldwin in two Italian films. The movies come from director Francesco Cinquemani and are live-action/animated Christmas movies, one called Kid Santa and the other Billie’s Magic World. The Baldwins are also producing for Minerva Pictures alongside Andrea Iervolino and Monica Bacardi’s ILBE.

The actor had also put in efforts to finish Rust despite the on-set accident that killed Halyna Hutchins. In legal paperwork, Baldwin revealed that he’d spoken with fellow cast and crew about resuming production with the goal of honoring Hutchins and having portions of the proceeds going to her family, estimated by the actor to be worth millions of dollars. Talks of possibly finishing the film were halted when Baldwin and others involved with the film were sued by Hutchins’ widower.

“No one who had been involved in Rust is eager to return to New Mexico,” Baldwin’s filing read. “It was only after an enormous input of time and work that Baldwin was able to convince each of the primary actors needed to complete the film and the film’s director Souza — who had been injured in that day’s events — that finishing Rust was an important step in honoring Halyna Hutchins’s memory and talent, defining her legacy, and, in turn, providing financial support to her family.”
