Marvel and DC Comics initially revealed during a ComicsPRO panel back in February that the publishers had been busy cooking up the next big comic book crossover event, and then the news finally broke in May that The Merc with a Mouth and The Dark Knight would indeed be appearing together in the highly anticipated one-shot, Deadpool/Batman #1 this September. At the time, only two different covers drawn by veteran artist Greg Capullo of Batman: Death of the Family and Wolverine: Revenge fame had been revealed. Now, though, a special sneak peek previewing several cool variant covers has dropped online, which features some of DC and Marvel’s most beloved characters, including a battle between Batman and Wolverine. Additional variant covers include Wonder Woman/Captain America, Catwoman/Magik, and Elektra/Batgirl (Cassandra Cain), all of which can also be viewed below.

Marvel Comics will publish the one-shot Deadpool/Batman #1, which will be available on Sept. 17. The story features the talents of writer Zeb Wells and the aforementioned artist Capullo. The main narrative focuses on The Caped Crusader and the chimichanga-eating Mutant, but the backup storylines in the comic book will feature additional characters from both iconic publishers, including Daredevil/Green Arrow, Captain America/Wonder Woman, and Krypto the Superdog/Jeff the Land Shark. The President of Marvel Entertainment, Dan Buckley, discussed the upcoming crossover by saying in an interview with Entertainment Weekly (below):

Fans and critics love James Gunn’s Man of Steel, but the film still falls short of what Marvel’s crème de la crème achieved theatrically.

“A lot of things have to align. Mostly we plan our editorial schedule pretty far out. DC does their schedule pretty far out. You want to have the right talent involved because with this type of thing, you want to elevate it as much as you can to get people excited.”

All four of the variant covers featured below were drawn for Deadpool/Batman #1, but this is only the beginning of The Dark Knight’s run-in with the foul-mouthed Mutant. In November, DC Comics will step up to the plate and publish their own installment of the iconic crossover in the pages of the highly anticipated one-shot Batman/Deadpool #1.

‘Batman/Deadpool’ Will Complete the Epic Crossover in November

The Deadpool/Batman #1 announcement coincided with a press release from DC Comics in which it was revealed that the iconic crossover would continue in the pages of the anxiously anticipated Batman/Deadpool #1. Fans of The Dark Knight and The Merc with a Mouth will have to wait until November, though, which is a full two months after the first of the one-shots drops.

Currently, only the Deadpool/Batman No. 1 variants have been revealed, but DC Comics could unveil Batman/Deadpool #1 variant covers next week at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con. The press release does indicate that Batman/Deadpool #1 will also feature backup stories to complement the main event between The Caped Crusader and the Merc with a mouth, and DC will feature comic book-centric panels in San Diego on Thursday, July 24 (DC ALL IN: WHAT’S NEXT) from 11:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. PDT and Saturday, July 26 (DC COMICS: METROPOLIS AND BEYOND plus DC COMICS: GOTHAM CITY) from 11:15 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. All three panels will be held in Room 6DE.

Perhaps, one day, Marvel Studios and DC Studios could come together and feature a must-see crossover event of their own on the big screen. Such a collaboration would be box office gold. Until then, though, fans of the MCU and DCU can enjoy James Gunn’s box office hit Superman, which is now playing in theaters, and The Fantastic Four: First Steps drops in cinemas on July 25.
