Batwoman Canceled After Three Seasons

The CW has had enough Batwoman. Per showrunner Caroline Dries, the network has officially canceled the series, a move that seems to be just as disappointing for her as it will undoubtedly be for the fans. In an emotional statement posted to Twitter, Dries expresses her gratitude for getting to go for as long as they did while thanking the fans for the support they had shown since the very beginning. From Twitter:

“Got the sad news that Batwoman will not be seeing an S4. I am bummed, but full of gratitude. What an honor to make 51 episodes. So many inspiring, brilliant people contributed to this series. Thank you producers, cast and crew. Thank you, fans! We love you.”

Batwoman was created for The CW by Dries and is a part of the network’s Arrowverse, alongside Arrow, The Flash, and many other shows. The series originally starred Ruby Rose as Kate Kane, the cousin of Bruce Wayne who arrives in Gotham City to clean up the streets after years of Batman’s absence. After the show was renewed for season 2, it was announced that Rose was leaving the series, but The CW would be moving forward by recasting the lead star.

In season 2, Javicia Leslie was introduced as Ryan Wilder, a new character who would pick up where Kate Kane left off. Wallis Day was later brought in to play Kate to help resolve that character’s storylines. The series also starred Rachel Skarsten, Meagan Tandy, Nicole Kang, Camrus Johnson, Elizabeth Anweis, Dougray Scott, Victoria Cartagena, and Robin Givens.

Batwoman Fans Had Been Rallying for a Renewal

DC Entertainment

Earlier this month, Batwoman fans had gotten the series trending with a social media campaign calling for its renewal. Maybe they saw the writing on the wall, as that followed The CW renewing other Arrowverse shows like The Flash and Superman & Lois. The campaign had even gotten the attention of lead star Javicia Leslie, who joined in on the campaign on Twitter.

Leslie previously spoke with MovieWeb about what it was like to play Batwoman in the Arrowverse. She addressed how important it was for her to play a character with whom she had so much in common, which made it effortless for her to adapt into becoming this character. It may have been just two seasons for Leslie, but the Batwoman star seems to have greatly enjoyed becoming a superhero on-screen. From our interview:

“It’s funny because I feel like Ryan and I have so much in common. Seeing Ryan do her thing, and then also seeing so many fans connect to Ryan, it shows me things I thought were weird in me as a kid, I’m not alone. It’s so many of us like Ryan. I’m shy when it comes to romantic relationships. Ryan is shy when it comes to romantic relationships. Ryan’s very focused on her job. I’m very focused on my job. All these little things the fans point out and make fun of, these are things that I’ve also connected to. So seeing Ryan shine, seeing Ryan be a representation to so many people, and seeing Ryan be a hero, it lets me know that as a kid all of that lived in me.”

Batwoman aired its final episode on The CW in March.
