A bombshell surprise in the closing moments of the third and final season might have major implications for the future of the dystopian thriller, as the show’s creator, Hwang Dong-hyuk, enlisted an Academy Award-winning actor to make an unexpected cameo appearance that could potentially set up a spin-off series.
Seemingly out of nowhere, in the very last scene of the final episode of Squid Game, none other than Cate Blanchett shows up. The Hollywood A-lister, who is best known for her roles in The Lord of the Rings, Thor: Ragnarok, and more recently, Steven Soderbergh’s critically acclaimed spy thriller Black Bag, appears on the streets of Los Angeles, recruiting players to presumably join the US version of the show’s deadly titular competition. Dong-hyuk explained why he felt Blanchett was the “perfect fit” for Gong Yoo’s American counterpart:

If Gong Yoo is the Korean Recruiter, I thought she would be the perfect fit as the American Recruiter, bringing a short but gripping and impactful ending to the story.”
