David Duchovny Would Always Be Up for an X-Files Return

While co-star Gillian Anderson doesn’t have much interest in doing more X Files, David Duchovny would listen if there were new ideas.

Gillian Anderson may have made it clear that she really don’t want to make another return to The X-Files in any way, co-star David Duchovny is more open to reprising his role if creator Chris Carter had the right story. The X-Files originally started in 1993 and became one of the biggest sci-fi series of the decade. While two movies, a failed spin-off and a two-season revival have kept the franchise alive, is there really a chance that the truth could still be out there?

The X-Files aired nine seasons of conspiracies, aliens and monsters between 1993 and 2001, and while David Duchovny was a constant in the show, Gillian Anderson ducked out for a while on more than one occasion. While Anderson did return by the end of the run, and also appeared in both movies and the revival, she made it clear that the way Dana Scully’s story panned out was not something she was really pleased with, making the likelihood of her ever returning again slim. Duchovny however would go searching for the truth again, if Chris Carter had an idea for another season. He told Yahoo! Entertainment:

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

“I’m always up for more, clearly. Someone sent me a clip of Joel McHale from the 2016 episodes we did, and it’s a spot-on description of where we’re at six years later. I don’t think Chris Carter gets enough credit for being [prescient]. Forget about the ins and outs of plots and who gets pregnant or who gets shot. I mean, every show turns into a soap opera, so you have limited options. People are going to die or get pregnant or go to prison, right? Or become president.

I think like it’s a little bit in the weeds to worry about characters’ fates, when you realize that Chris somehow made a show in 1993, and again in 2016, that predicted what 2022 would be like. If he wanted to do more, I’d certainly listen to him. I’d say, “What have you got?”

Does The X-Files Have Anything New To Give?

20th Television

The time for nostalgic returns is definitely now, but for every successful return for a 30-year plus TV series or movie there is a graveyard of failures. Having already had one comeback, is there anything left in the X-Files’ tank that we haven’t seen before. Gillian Anderson told Variety earlier this year that “there would have to be a whole new set of writers and the baton would need to be handed on for it feel like it was new and progressive.”

The X-Files is now owned by Disney, having become one of their legacy acquisitions from the Fox merger. Like many franchises to be taken on by the House of Mouse, the real question is not whether this is anything left to give from the series, but whether Disney will be willing to throw money at it to find out. For now, it seems like The X-Files will not be one of the biggest IPs on Disney’s radar, but just like in the show, the truth will be revealed somewhere down the line.
