Dead City Season 3 Episode 4 Review: Is Maggie Getting a New Love Interest?

Well, that’s one way to shake things up!

The Walking Dead: Dead City Season 3 Episode 4 flirted with the idea of Maggie getting a love interest, and it came out of left field.

The latter seasons of The Walking Dead and the first two seasons of The Walking Dead: Dead City put her in a leadership role where she puts her community before herself.

(Robert Clark/AMC)

She’s been so laser-focused on building communities from the ground up, but the reality is that many people move on after being widowed.

Many The Walking Dead characters have already, but it never seemed like a romance for Maggie was in the cards, and I hope she doesn’t close herself off from that possibility.

I’m not sure what to make of potentially Luis being the new man in her life. I spent most of this episode expecting his demise.

There was a lot of emphasis on him not leaving the city, so I had a feeling he would walk into some trap and that Maggie would have to return to Manhattan to break the news to Renata.

There was a rapport between him and Maggie. They have so much in common, but it seems inevitable that any potential relationship will have some push and pull, because neither of them may be ready to take that step toward something more.

(Robert Clark/AMC)

You could see the look on Maggie‘s face the morning after something almost happened between them.

It was a look of sadness and, I think, guilt that she was thinking about making out with someone who wasn’t her dearly departed Glenn.

I really hope that losing Glenn’s wedding ring won’t be taken as the universe giving her a sign that she shouldn’t pursue any future relationships.

The Walking Dead: Dead City Is Tackling a Decaying Manhattan

Then again, what happened was pure apocalyptic, if that’s possible in an apocalypse.

On a show about the zombie apocalypse, I just figured it would gloss over the disrepair of buildings, how they can fall apart, and how sinkholes can pop up anywhere.

(Robert Clark/AMC)

It was tragic that they lost most of their pantry contents to it, but maybe this will be a bit of a lesson to keep more than one pantry.

Maybe this is something they already do, but since everyone’s reactions to the loss of the food were so extreme, I’m going with them losing it all.

With so many new members in their community, this is a catastrophic result, and the fractures in the ground seem poised to spread throughout it.

We’re already seeing people complain that opening the doors has led to too many mouths to feed, and I get it.

Everyone should participate in this community and bring in as many resources as they take.

(Robert Clark/AMC)

I don’t know where things are headed on the back half of The Walking Dead: Dead City Season 3 because there could be aftershocks that render other parts of Manhattan out of commission.

The sight of the ground collapsing into the subway was spectacular, and maybe this could provide an entry point below the city to scavenge for resources.

This being The Walking Dead franchise, there’s bound to be a whole community down there, or, worse, scarier zombies who will stop at nothing to get some food.

I doubt anyone living underground would want the blueprints for using Walkers as an energy source, so this could lead to even more unrest in an already rocky community.

The whole “Trader” storyline felt like it was ripped out of a comic book in tone, but I liked that the lady lived up to the whispers of getting people whatever they need.

(Robert Clark/AMC)

So many things have gone wrong for the characters in this franchise that I expected the man showing up to be trying to lead Maggie and Luis to their deaths.

The last thing I expected was a full-blown community in the wilderness, wholesome and filled with joy.

This far into the apocalypse, there are fewer people alive, but knowing there are small pockets of the world where things aren’t as bad was enough to let Maggie and Luis shut off from the mission at hand.

Seeing Maggie offer the blueprints harkens back to the Maggie we know and love from the original series.

I don’t know what’s changed, but The Walking Dead: Dead City Season 3 is doing a fantastic job of crafting new, compelling storylines for every character.

(Robert Clark/AMC)

We have Hershel training in the medical field. We have Negan being Negan. It all just feels right.

Speaking of Negan, I’m surprised he wasn’t wittier toward Renata. He obviously knows that living in the apartment building will mean his every move is watched, so I’m not surprised he concluded she was up to no good.

Negan Is Getting Good Character Development

Negan has spent so many years as a bit of a nomad, not having to conform to the rules of the communities he’s been part of.

But Renata knows his past and feels he’s best kept under her watchful eye in case anyone does break through the apartment doors.

They’re supposed to be like safe houses, but everything keeps changing in Manhattan, so she wants to be prepared.

(Robert Clark/AMC)

I’m surprised that she put together that he killed the Dama and didn’t take it to Maggie. This was an effective way to show him that there’s more to her than being Maggie’s confidante.

I’m not sure how Maggie will feel when she learns the truth, but it was a refreshing plot point nonetheless.

The Walking Dead: Dead City Season 3 is on a roll, and I hope it never slows down.
