‘Elden Ring’ Film Adaptation in the Works at A24

The best-selling video game Elden Ring is now officially getting a film adaptation, and the ambitious project has been acquired by one of the most prominent movie studios working today. Directed by Hidetaka Miyazaki, the FromSoftware title followed an epic fantasy tale that was created with the help of Game of Thrones author George R. R. Martin. Now, A24 has confirmed that the film is in development, and filmmaker Alex Garland will be helming the movie.

MovieWeb discovered earlier this month that A24 was developing an Elden Ring movie, but at the time our sources were unable to confirm Garland’s involvement. A rumor at the time stated that Garland was “in talks” to direct the film adaptation. A24 is doubling down on the video game movie business as they are also developing a Death Stranding film based on the Hideo Kojima franchise from Pig director Michael Sarnoski. Peter Rice is set to produce Elden Ring alongside Andrew Macdonald and Allon Reich from DNA, as well as George R. R. Martin and Vince Gerardis.

Is the video game adaptation a hit with critics so far?

In 2024, during an interview with The Guardian, Miyazaki addressed the possibility of bringing the world of Elden Ring into another medium. He confirmed that FromSoftware did not have the means necessary to make a film adaptation. However, he revealed that he had no reason to prevent the project from happening, only that a “very strong partner” would have to be involved in some way. It seems A24 has become that special collaborator. His words below:

“I don’t see any reason to deny another interpretation or adaptation of Elden Ring, a movie for example, But I don’t think myself, or FromSoftware, have the knowledge or ability to produce something in a different medium. So that’s where a very strong partner would come into play. We’d have to build a lot of trust and agreement on whatever it is we’re trying to achieve, but there’s interest, for sure.”

George R. R. Martin Already Hinted at an ‘Elden Ring’ Film Before

FromSoftware

Earlier this year, George R. R. Martin seemingly revealed that an Elden Ring movie was in discussions. “Well, I can’t say too much about it, but there is some talk about making a movie out of Elden Ring,” Martin told IGN. However, he did not divulge which studio was working on the project, or if a filmmaker was attached to direct or write the film. Martin himself may be involved in some capacity. After all, he remains a close contributor to the ongoing Game of Thrones spin-offs on HBO, despite his constant critiques of how the network is handling them. That said, in this case, Martin was not the sole writer behind Elden Ring and only contributed to the worldbuilding aspects of the video game.

Elden Ring is a fantasy action video game with a massive scale like no other. As the player, they are tasked with claiming the Elden Ring as the Tarnished, the name given to those who have lost the grace of the magical Erdtree, located in the Lands Between. Standing in their way are royal gods and powerful warriors that also seek to take the reins of a broken kingdom. To a certain extent, it’s Game of Thrones mixed with The Lord of the Rings, but on steroids. Check out the spellbinding plot synopsis for the video game, which does a good job of illustrating the high-concept nature of Elden Ring.

“In the Lands Between ruled by Queen Marika the Eternal, the Elden Ring, the source of the Erdtree, has been shattered.

Marika’s offspring, demigods all, claimed the shards of the Elden Ring known as the Great Runes, and the mad taint of their newfound strength triggered a war: The Shattering. A war that meant abandonment by the Greater Will.

And now the guidance of grace will be brought to the Tarnished who were spurned by the grace of gold and exiled from the Lands Between. Ye dead who yet live, your grace long lost, follow the path to the Lands Between beyond the foggy sea to stand before the Elden Ring.”
