In a world of reboots and revivals, it seems like it’s a better time than ever to bring back My Name Is Earl. Originally debuting on NBC in 2005, the show was canceled in 2009 after four seasons. As creator Greg Garcia had expected the show to be renewed, the series concluded with a cliffhanger at the end of season 4, leaving multiple storylines unresolved. As the show has maintained its fanbase in subsequent years through streaming, there has been interest in a revival, and series star Jason Lee teased in 2020 that he was hoping to see the show revived as “at least like, even a little three-part series.”
In a new interview with ScreenRant to promote his new film God Is a Bullet, Lee’s co-star Ethan Suplee addressed the chances of My Name Is Earl getting revived. He revealed that Garcia had in fact been pitching the possible revival to different studios, but for whatever reason, there weren’t any takers. Suplee figures that this is because the show, even with its cult following, is still not quite as popular as some of the other big shows form years past that have been given recent revivals.
As Suplee explains:
“Man, I think it would be awesome, and I think everybody involved has said they would do it. Greg Garcia went and pitched it to a number of studios, and nobody bit. I think when you see shows that are coming back for revivals, like I think they did with Will & Grace and Full House, those were just much larger shows than My Name Is Earl. My Name Is Earl did very well, but I just don’t think it was ever as big as Will & Grace.”

Suplee also shares his belief that Garcia and his former co-stars are all still just as interested as he is in revisiting the world of My Name Is Earl. The actor even says how much he loves the concept Garcia has in mind for how to conclude the story. With that said, Suplee also admits that he thinks it’s unlikely that the revival series will happen at this point.
“I think we would all do it, and we’ve talked about doing it, and Greg Garcia has explained what the last episode would have been had he been given notice, like, ‘This is it,’ and it and it’s so good. It would be really the cherry on top of My Name is Earl, so I would love for it to happen, but I don’t have a lot of hope that it will happen.”
My Name Is Earl tells the story of Earl Hickey (Jason Lee), a man who’d done nothing but “bad things” all his life until he learned about the concept of karma. Determined to turn his life around, Earl creates a list of all his wrongdoings and sets about doing something to make every single one of them right. Suplee co-starred as Earl’s brother Randy, with the series also starring Jaime Pressly as Earl’s ex-wife Joy; Eddie Steeples as Darnell Turner, a friend of Earl’s and Joy’s new husband; and Nadine Velazquez as Catalina, the maid of the motel where Earl and Randy stay who also becomes close with the brothers.
My Name Is Earl is streaming on Hulu.
