The next DCU film has officially begun production, and no, it’s not a Superman sequel. One of Batman’s most iconic villains, Clayface, is getting his own solo movie from acclaimed writer Mike Flanagan. The first look at the film, directed by James Watkins (Speak No Evil), has already generated buzz from fans, especially as some begin to scour for DCU Easter eggs.
The first images from the set of Clayface surfaced online during the Labor Day weekend. Tom Rhys Harries was spotted on set as Matt Hagen, an actor who becomes heavily disfigured before undergoing an unprecedented procedure that cures him, giving him shapeshifting powers. And while DC Studios has been adamant that it takes place within James Gunn’s shared universe, fans can’t help but find clues that point toward Matt Reeves’ The Batman. From mentions of a party drug called “bliss,” which was featured in The Penguin, to similar set dressing to the 2022 film, some believe it is possible that Clayface takes place in the same world as The Batman. You can check out the images below.
The first look at Harries in the titular role as the iconic DC villain arrived alongside the news that Eddie Marsan (Ray Donovan) has joined the cast, which also includes Naomi Ackie (Mickey 17) and Max Minghella (The Social Network). It has not been confirmed who Marsan is playing, but reports suggest that he could be Matt Hagen’s manager. When it comes to possible connections to The Batman, it should be noted that, while Reeves has a producing credit, Gunn has repeatedly stated that Clayface takes place in the DCU. Any similarities to the Epic Crime Saga can likely be chalked up to it borrowing aspects of Gotham that are inherent to the source material.
