Good Girls Gets Canceled at NBC, and It’s Not Moving to Netflix

It’s the end of the road for Good Girls. After four seasons airing on NBC, the acclaimed comedy series has been canceled with no plans to produce a fifth season for the network. The season 4 finale, which is set to air on July 22, will now serve as the series finale, and there are just five episodes left remaining in the series. NBC and Universal Television wanted to renew Good Girls for a fifth and final season, but terms couldn’t be met in a way that allowed the show to continue.

Worse yet, plans to save the series with a resurrection on Netflix have already fallen through. Because the series has found a new audience at Netflix, which serves as its streaming home, there was talk of Good Girls moving to the platform for a fifth season. These efforts have reportedly “imploded,” and Netflix will not be acquiring the series as an original for season 5.

The success of Lucifer moving from Fox to Netflix has led to fans often calling for the streamer to save other popular shows when they’re prematurely canceled. We’ve also seen it happen with other shows like ABC’s Designated Survivor, AMC’s The Killing, and A&E’s Longmire. Unfortunately, they’re more selective these days when it comes to saving canceled shows, even if there’s a fan campaign coupled with strong efforts from the cast and crew to keep it going. That was recently the case with Manifest, which Netflix declined to pick up following its own NBC cancelation.

Some of the cast members are starting to react to the news online. This includes Matthew Lillard, who plays Dean Boland on the series. Posting a link to the report, Lillard wrote, “So. Very. Sad.”

Mae Whitman appears in the show in one of the lead roles as Annie Marks, the younger sister of Christina Hendricks’ Beth Boland. She reacted to the news by also posting a screenshot expressing her reaction.

Good Girls was created by Jenna Bans, who also served as an executive producer alongside pilot director Dean Parisot and Jeannine Renshaw for Universal Television. The series stars Christina Hendricks, Retta, Mae Whitman, Reno Wilson, Manny Montana, Lidya Jewett, Isaiah Stannard, Matthew Lillard, and David Hornsby.

The synopsis for Good Girls reads: “The series follows three suburban Michigan mothers, two of whom are sisters, who are having a hard time trying to make ends meet. They are tired of having everything taken away from them so they decide to pull off an unlikely heist by robbing a supermarket, only to discover that they are in for more than they expected. Their successful robbery attracts the attention of the store manager after he recognizes one of the women, but for a different reason altogether than just the money.”

Good Girls will end with its final episode on July 22 on NBC. Also canceled at the network this season are Manifest, Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist, and Debris. Brooklyn Nine-Nine and This Is Us will return for the 2021-22 season for their final seasons. This news comes to us from The Hollywood Reporter.
