When central NCIS protagonist Leroy Jethro Gibbs left the show in the 2021 episode “Great Wide Open” to search for adventure and peace in remote Alaska, there was immediate speculation regarding how and when Mark Harmon might return as Gibbs in a future NCIS episode. Instead, Harmon returned as the narrator of the prequel series NCIS: Origins, which opens in 1991, when a younger Gibbs, played by Austin Stowell, began his investigative career with the Camp Pendleton branch of the Naval Investigative Service (NIS), the precursor to NCIS while processing the deaths of his daughter and wife.
