Lessons in Chemistry, based on the book of the same name by author Bonnie Garmus, is set as a period drama mini-series. At the helm is Lee Eisenberg, who previously worked on other Apple TV+ series such as Little America and WeCrashed, Showtime’s SMILF, and several episodes of NBC’s beloved mockumentary sitcom The Office. He also serves as executive producer alongside Jason Bateman, Michael Costigan, Susannah Grant, Natalie Sandy, and lead actor Brie Larson. Starring with her are some familiar faces like Lewis Pullman (Top Gun: Maverick), Aja Naomi King (How to Get Away With Murder), Stephanie Koening (The Flight Attendant), Beau Bridges (Homeland), Kevin Sussman (The Dropout), and Thomas Mann (About Fate).

What is Lessons in Chemistry About?

The on-screen adaptation of Lessons in Chemistry brings audiences back to the 1950s, an aesthetically iconic yet always controversial period of Americana that did not cater to women very much at all. The life of the housewife was glorified and also a forced pigeonhole for essentially any young woman in society at that point. The plot of the show centers around one particular woman named Elizabeth Zott (Larson), an up-and-coming chemist who dreams of becoming a superb scientist, but finds herself stifled by the ever-present patriarchy around her that traditionally doesn’t permit women to pursue such a career. At one point she’s fired from the lab, and scrambles to find a way back into the work she loves. It comes in the ironic form of a TV host job on a cooking show called ‘Supper at Six’. As she makes different recipes for the cameras and in front of a live audience, she also incorporates small science lessons into each one. This provides a second form of education for all the housewives and young girls who tune in to watch.

Lessons in Chemistry premieres its first two episodes exclusively on Apple TV+ on October 13, with all remaining episodes to air every Friday. View the teaser trailer below.
