Loki Will Break Disney+ Tradition with Mischievous Rollout Strategy

Unlike the first two Disney+ MCU shows, episodes of Loki will now be released on Wednesdays as opposed to Fridays. The show, which will follow the God of Mischief as he takes on new and mysterious missions throughout space and time, will premiere its first episode on June 9th, two days earlier than originally expected. After that, each episode will release the following Wednesday. The news is surprising given that every major Disney+ show thus far has only released episodes on Friday, and it is not known exactly why Disney has switched up the schedule.

Loki will be the third MCU series released on the platform this year, with WandaVision and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier being the first two. The shows have marked a change of pace for Marvel Studios as they venture into a new medium, and it has arguably worked out tremendously for them. Both WandaVision and Falcon and the Winter Soldier have been adored by fans and critics while crushing streaming records. Loki is expected to perform just as well, if not better.

The upcoming show will deviate slightly from the main timeline of the MCU as we follow a past version of Loki. Marvel fans will remember Thanos killing Loki in Avengers: Infinity War, of which the God of Mischief has not come back. Loki’s return to Marvel Studios is because of the events of Avengers: Endgame. Tony Stark, Steve Rogers, and Scott Lang all travelled back in time to the famous Battle of New York in 2012 where Loki attempted to conquer Earth. In an effort to acquire the Tesseract, Stark inadvertently dropped the Tesseract giving Loki the ability to escape with it. This series will be about that Loki where he will be forced to amend the timeline that he accidently erupted. It has also been heavily rumored that Loki will likely receive multiple seasons due to its limited interaction with the main MCU timeline.

Marvel Studios is also planning on releasing many more shows on the Disney+ streaming platform. After Loki, Disney is planning to bring us the animated What If? show this summer, Ms. Marvel (starring Iman Vellani) later this year, and Hawkeye (starring Jeremy Renner and Hailee Steinfeld) sometime in the winter. Other MCU shows that have been announced are She-Hulk (starring Tatiana Maslany), Moon Knight (rumored to star Oscar Isaac), Secret Invasion (starring Samuel L. Jackson), Armor Wars (starring Don Cheadle), and Ironheart (starring Dominique Thorn). Many of these shows are already filming and are expected to brought to fans between now and mid-2023.

Loki stars the beloved Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Owen Wilson as Mobius M. Mobius, Sophia Di Martino, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Wunmi Mosaku, Erika Coleman, Sasha Lane, and Richard E. Grant in an unkown role. Kate Herron (Sex Education) will direct each episode with Michael Waldron (Rick and Morty) being the head writer. Be sure to check out the Loki premiere on Disney+ on Wednesday, June 9th – subsequent episodes being released weekly on Wednesdays.
