Marvel Fans Celebrate Anniversary of Anthony Mackie’s Debut as Captain America

Although Steve Rogers handed over Captain America’s shield to Sam Wilson in the final scenes of Avengers: Endgame, it wasn’t until the finale of the Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier that Sam officially took on the mantle of Captain America, and in the process gained himself a movie out of it. Now, one year on from that moment, Marvel fans have been commemorating the anniversary on social media and looking forward to Anthony Mackie’s upcoming Captain America 4, which is likely to play a part in the MCU’s Phase 5.

April 23 marked one year since Mackie’s Sam Wilson finally accepted the responsibility that Steve Rogers wanted to bestow on him and suited up as the new Captain America in “One World, One People”, the final episode of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. While it seemed like an obvious conclusion to the series, the news that there would be a fourth Captain America movie came as a surprise in its wake. While he is just commencing filming on Twisted Metal, after which he will move on to the Marvel movie, Mackie has already begun preparing for the new role in the MCU as he explained to Variety earlier this month.

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

“Music is a part of my life. Every role that I play, I pick a song to represent that character, and I pick a piece of art to represent that character. So music has always been kind of the defining factor of my life and my career.”

For his Captain America movie debut, Mackie chose the Tupac track, “Hit ‘Em Up.”

Marvel Fans had Plenty of Love to Show For Mackie’s Cap Anniversary

Marvel Studios/Disney

Marvel fans have a good memory for when certain events happen in the MCU, and after Chris Evans made his bow as Captain America after playing the role for over a decade, the finale of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier brought the first true look at his successor. Now, one year on, there is clearly still a lot of love for Anthony Mackie’s new Cap, and that bodes well for his solo movie when it finally arrives in the next couple of years.

“One year ago, on April 23, 2021, the finale of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier aired. In honor of Sam Wilson taking on the Captain America mantle, the title credits were updated to Captain America and the Winter Soldier!” wrote The Falcon and the Winter Soldier News on Twitter.

There were plenty of others eager to add their comments to the anniversary celebration, but also to look forward to the next time we see Anthony Mackie in his new role in the MCU. As one of the “new beginnings” of Phase 4, Sam Wilson still has an interesting future ahead of him, but whether that will feature Bucky Barnes, played by Sebastian Stan, is still to be revealed. While we wait of more news on this and the next phase of the MCU, here are just some of the other messages shared in honor of the new Captain America’s debut appearance.
