Netflix Wanted One Dark Line Cut From Wednesday.

Wednesday has become Netflix’s darling of the moment, an accolade that would no doubt mortify the young Nevermore student. However, according to the series co-creators Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, while the streamer allowed them to include many morbid and unsavory moments in the series, there was one particular line that was almost too much for them to allow.

As Netflix’s new most-watched English-language debut, Wednesday has shattered all expectations to become one of the most popular Addams Family adaptations ever and take its place as one of the platform’s biggest performers. However, there was almost a little bit of interference with one of the macabre lines that they felt went a little too far, but the writers insisted it should stay to remain true to the character. Speaking to Indiewire, Gough and Millar explained that some executives wanted to take out a line when Wednesday is told by her roommate Enid to “take a stab at socials,” and the young Addams expresses her fondness for stabbings. They said:

Gough: “Netflix was always very supportive and the executives were huge Addams Family fans. We still did have executives wanting to cut some lines.”

Millar: “That’s the whole point of the character. To lose that or dilute that is a betrayal of the character.”

Murder and death clearly go hand in hand with Wednesday’s dark and mysterious story, and it is strange that one line should cause any concern in a show that is all about killing and dark deeds. Luckily, the worries were not enough to see this or any other lines removed, and it all seems to have worked out for the best.

Is Wednesday Season 2 Coming?

Netflix

While Netflix needs their usual little bit of time to ponder whether to renew Wednesday, it seems almost certain that the spooky show will be back for more dark adventures in the near future. This is just as well for the series showrunners, as Millar previously revealed that they did not go into the project with just one season in mind. He said:

“For us it’s always looking at the future and when we sit down to create a show, it’s looking at multiple seasons, ideally. That’s never expected, but that’s the anticipation that hopefully the show is successful. So you always lay out at least three or four seasons’ worth of potential storylines for your characters. It can evolve and change. Often, you want to see which characters or cast pop and who you like to write for. So you want to keep it open and organic enough to change it and evolve it, but we certainly have a pretty clear runway of what we want to do in future seasons.”

Wednesday could be the start of a new universe for Netflix, with possible spin-offs having already been discussed. With previous Addams Family projects focusing on the whole family, and particularly Morticia and Gomez, there are plenty of secondary characters who could hold their own shows. And who wouldn’t want to see a set of shorts featuring the misadventures of Thing? But, for now, fans can watch, or rewatch, the entire first season of Wednesday on Netflix.
