Rick and Michonne Spinoff Wraps Filming

Fans of The Walking Dead will soon see Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) and Michonne (Danai Gurira) back together again. When it was announced that The Walking Dead was ending after eleven seasons, it was also revealed that some of the characters would continue to have their stories expanded upon in separate spinoff shows. One of those, which was originally conceived as a movie trilogy, brings some resolution to the story of Rick and Michonne, which had been left open-ended by the end of The Walking Dead. It was reported in February that filming had begun, and heading into the end of May, it’s been revealed that production has since wrapped.

“Thank you for creating the next world of The Walking Dead with us,” reads a note given to the crew upon wrapping. “Your talent, energy, and enthusiasm through it all has been the thing that’s gotten us through it all. Bringing home a story more than a decade in the telling!”

The note, which is signed by Lincoln, Gurira, showrunner Scott Gimple, and producers Denise Huth & Brian Bockrath, adds: “The story will live on and our work with it; we’re the ones who live!”

There Are More Spinoffs Where That Came From

AMC

There isn’t very much that has been revealed about this spinoff, other than that it brings Rick and Michonne back together. How the story ends remains to be seen, but as it was developed as a limited series, it will likely have a fairly conclusive ending if the goal is to bring closure to both characters. The official logline for the Richonne spinoff is as follows:

“This series presents an epic love story of two characters changed by a changed world. Kept apart by distance. By an unstoppable power. By the ghosts of who they were. Rick and Michonne are thrown into another world, built on a war against the dead… And ultimately, a war against the living. Can they find each other and who they were in a place and situation unlike any they’ve ever known before? Are they enemies? Lovers? Victims? Victors? Without each other, are they even alive — or will they find that they, too, are the Walking Dead?”

Meanwhile, more spinoffs are also on the way, so Rick and Michonne aren’t the only fan favorites that viewers of The Walking Dead will be seeing again. Another spinoff, The Walking Dead: Dead City, follows Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) as the two wind up in Manhattan deep into the apocalypse, facing all new dangers and challenges, forcing them to rely on one another to survive in spite of their dark history. Norman Reedus is also back as Daryl Dixon in another spinoff series that sends the arrow-shooting zombie-slayer to France, similarly in an all-new environment that will make the country boy feel like a fish out of water.

AMC has not yet announced a premiere date for the Walking Dead spinoff series about Rick and Michonne, but it is expected to arrive sometime in 2024.
