The Company You Keep Canceled at ABC After One Season

It’s going to be a one-season run for the ABC series The Company You Keep. Inspired by the South Korean series My Fellow Citizens!, the series was created by Julia Cohen with Milo Ventimiglia and Catherine Haena Kim leading the cast. The show premiered on ABC in February and wrapped up its 10-episode freshman season earlier this month. Following soft ratings that reached a series low with the season finale, it’s now been reported that ABC has axed The Company You Keep after one season with no plans to develop season 2.

The news came amid multiple shows getting canceled over the past week. Along with The Company You Keep, ABC also axed Alaska Daily after one season along with Big Sky after a three-season run. CBS controversially canceled S.W.A.T. after five seasons, though they have since reversed that decision after an outcry from fans and star Shemar Moore. However, the network did cancel both True Lies and East New York, both of which ran for one season. Meanwhile, FOX also ruffled some feathers with fans by canceling Mayim Bialik’s Call Me Kate after three seasons.

Along with Ventimiglia and Kim, the show also starred Sarah Wayne Callies, Polly Draper, William Fichtner, Tim Chiou, James Saito, Freda Foh Shen, and Felisah Terrell. Ventimiglia also served as an executive producer on The Company You Keep alongside Russ Cundiff, Todd Harthan, Jon M. Chu, Ciatlin Foito, Ben Younger, Lindsay Goffman, Julia Cohen, and Phil Klemmer. It was produced by Michael Gray, Deanna Harris, and Nick Paveonetti.

The Company You Keep Has Ended

The Company You Keep follows Ventimiglia as Charlie, a con man indebted to a crime boss (Terrell) who sees a romance blossom with a CIA agent (Kim). While Charlie is a master con man, his Achilles heel is romance, as Ventimiglia previously explained about his character.

“He’s a professional liar! Telling the truth is a massive challenge — and a consequence — for Charlie,” he told TV Insider. “His blind spot has always been romance. He wants to find love and live a normal life, but he’s not built for it. That’s an incredible complication.”

The actor and exec producer also noted, “[Charlie] is a criminal, but he’s a good bad guy. You’re rooting for him.”

Terrell had also subtly expressed hopes in the show continuing for season 2. Hyping up the season 1 finale, Terrell had suggested that fans would not be able to wait for the show’s return. That showed some optimism in getting the renewal order from the network for a second season, though it now appears those questions will remain unanswered.

“Pretty much everything comes to a head,” Terrell said, via Tell-Tale TV. “Big truths are being revealed. It’s going to be a ride. It’s just really good. I can guarantee you that everyone, when you finish the finale, no one’s going to want to wait months for a season 2. So I’ll just say that.”
