has been the mastermind behind some of the greatest horror movies of the last 20 years, both as a director and producer. However, one movie that got away – for now – was his planned spinoff from The Conjuring
franchise centered on The Crooked Man character. While fans of the creepy franchise were massively disappointed when the offshoot was scrapped, it seems that they are actually to blame for the film’s demise – as they became too obsessed with another character instead.
The Conjuring was released in 2013, with a sequel following 2016. However, in between was Annabelle, a spinoff focusing on the vintage doll, which proved that there was plenty of scope for movies outside the main franchise to be incredibly popular. Following The Conjuring 2, there were plans for The Crooked Man to be the next adjacent movie, but something else captured the public’s attention. As Wan told Entertainment Weekly:
“We thought the Crooked Man was basically going to be the Annabelle for Conjuring 2…but when the audience saw the movie, they wanted to know more about the nun. That’s what they gravitated towards. So you got to listen to your fans, you got to listen to the audience.”

While there was another movie for Annabelle, and two films based on The Nun, that unfortunately meant The Crooked Man was shelved. With The Conjuring franchise set to end with this year’s The Conjuring: Last Rites, perhaps fans will never get to see what that movie would have looked like. Or, as Wan teased, maybe it will creep into the world at some point. He added:
“I still have a movie in my head that I would hopefully love to get off the ground one day, but we’ll see. I get fans that reach out to me every now and then, begging us to make a Crooked Man movie. Just as a fan, I would love to do it one day, if I can convince the studio to do so.”
James Wan Has Many New Projects in the Works
Universal Pictures
James Wan is one of those people who never seems to stop working, and his name is attached to more than 20 upcoming movies. Having recently been producer or executive producer on releases such as the TV series Teacup, and Stephen King movies Salem’s Lot and The Monkey, his upcoming projects include M3GAN 2.0 and the franchise’s spinoff SOULM8TE, Mortal Kombat II, Lee Cronin’s The Mummy, a return to another popular franchise with Thread: An Insidious Tale, and Saw XI – if it ever happens.
Wan has been a huge part of Hollywood since he blew everyone away as the director of Saw in 2004. Since then, he has been behind the Insidious and Conjuring franchises, and dipped his toe in some big IPs with Fast & Furious 7 and two Aquaman films to his name.
Among his more speculative future projects are a TV series based on Disney’s Gargoyles cartoon series, a movie version of the David Hasselhoff series Knight Rider, a Backrooms movie, and a new version of Stephen King’s The Tommyknockers. While not all of these projects may end up being made, or may not have Wan attached if they do, it is certain that Wan will be adding even more to this list in the future.
